The Canon RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM is a sharp, wide-angle macro lens for the RF mirrorless system. It's affordable, but doesn't offer L-series features like weather protection.
Crisp optics. 1:2 macro reproduction. Optical stabilization. Bright aperture. Attractive price.
Some barrel distortion. Vignette at wide apertures. No weather sealing or fluorine coating. Doesn't include lens hood or pouch.
The Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS Macro STM is a mild wide-angle prime lens for Canon’s EOS R full-frame mirrorless system. It’s the smallest, lightest and cheapest lens for the system to date, and like other 35mm lenses, is an ideal general-purpose option, flexible enough for street, landscape,...
Small and light but capable and versatile, this RF mirrorless lens makes perfect sense for the new EOS R or RP body. It’s great for everything from architectural, travel and street photography and other close-up situations. The RF 35mm's STM autofocus system is quiet but audible in operation.
Small and lightweight, Well balanced on EOS R/RP bodies, Quick and quiet STM autofocus
Macro maximum magnification ratio only 0.5x, Working distance is just 7cm
Many acquire a mirrorless camera for smaller size and lighter weight while retaining great image quality and the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro Lens follows through with that spirit.
For brilliant close-up photography, the RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM is compatible with Canon's Macro range of Speedlite flashes, including Macro Twin Lites and Macro Ring Lites, for studio-quality, controlled close-up lighting in various situations.
Although not the perfect choice for the EOS RP, the RF 35mm f/1.8 is the only RF-mount lens so far that fits comfortably on the lighter, more compact camera body. It’s also the most affordable of the RF lenses on offer so far.
A 35mm 0.5x macro lens may be an odd choice for one of the RF line’s first few lenses, but it’s nice to have a compact alternative to the other optics released so far. It’s a shame it’s not a true macro lens, but if you think of it more as a wide-aperture, wide-angle with the advantage of...
Compact and well balanced on EOS R, Great build quality, Lens control ring is a useful inclusion, Fast AF system, Great sharpness at moderate apertures, Very good corner sharpness wide open
Not a true 1:1 macro lens, Moderate vignetting at widest apertures, A little curvilinear distortion, No focus limit switch, AF motor somewhat noisy during stills
The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is the dark horse of the new Canon full-frame mirrorless system. By far the cheapest, lightest and most compact RF lens, it's also arguably the most versatile too, doubling up as both a great 35mm prime and a 1:2 magnification macro lens.
Im using a 24-105rf and now this rf35 f/1.8 on my EOS R. This lens has lovely Bokeh, nice build and super fast af plus solid stabilization. No weather resistance that I can see but at this price point this is what we get. Wide open at f1.8 this lens matches the 30 megapixels very well.
When the new EOSR came out, I was very much hoping that at least one of the early lenses would be a macro lens, since I get a great amount of enjoyment from macro photography. I was thrilled when the 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM Lens was announced. Getting it in the hand, it is so small!
Im a huge fan of good affordable primes due to the value they deliver, and judging by the amount of time this one has spent on my R since I bought it, I have to say its my current favorite. It is just so, so versatile, and the image quality is excellent.
A moderately priced lens for the EOS R system, the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is an all-arounder that will spend a lot of time on the EOS R camera. It is sharp edge-to-edge even wide-open and the color rendering is Canon at its best.
This lens is great value at its price point.Compared to an early Canon FD lens in macro mode it shows better contrast and a more neutral colour.Combined with the EOS R body it makes a compact walk around camera set up.
This is a light-weight general-purpose alternative to the 24-105, and a faster lens to shoot in low light. I like the image quality and focusing performance, and just wish it was weather sealed.
very versatile lens
I have been a diehard Nikon user (professionally) for 10 years but recently purchased the Canon EOS R. This was the only lens I bought with it. I prefer f/1.4 lenses and 35mm is not even a focal length I love, so I was not too excited honestly. But wow, this thing has impressed me.
This is a very useful and easy to carry lens. Very good image quality. Photographic subjects (humans in this case) are not intimidated by this lens when pointed in their direction which makes their facial expressions much more relaxed and natural.
I like this lens! Its light and sharp. Great for indoor low light and group photography. It can be used for portrait but I would have to get so close the subject which I dont like to do. The Canon EF 85mm f1.8 is a better choice (for head shots).
