The Canon PowerShot G5 X is a bulkier twin to the G7 X, adding an EVF, a hot shoe, and a vari-angle display. It's an excellent choice if you want a beefier compact.
-
+
Big 1-inch image sensor. Wide aperture zoom lens. Vari-angle touch display. EVF and hot shoe. Quick focus. Wi-Fi with NFC. Raw capture.
-
-
Expensive. Burst rate slows when shooting Raw. Lacks 4K video support.
The G5X may inherit the 4.2x optical zoom and 1in sensor of the G7X, thereby matching its quality and coverage, but is transformed in day-to-day use by the addition of an electronic viewfinder, fully-articulated screen, deeper grip and additional controls.
-
-
Larger and less pocketable than rival models., No 4k video, nor 1080p above 60p., No in-camera panorama mode., Burst speed in RAW is very slow.
Canon has announced two new 2015 entries to its powerful G-series line of compact point-and-shoot cameras. The Canon PowerShot G5 X boasts a 20.2-megapixel high sensitivity CMOS image sensor mated to the DIGIC 6 image processor as well as 4.2x (24-100mm) optical zoom lens with an f/1.8 - f/2.8 range...
-
+
Excellent image quality in most types of scenes with 1-inch image sensor, Good mix of automatic and manual control shooting options, Maximum aperture of f/1.8 is good for shooting portraits, Having a viewfinder is a great option in this price range, Electronic viewfinder is of a strong quality with...

Optical zoom is limited to 4.2x, Camera is chunky with an odd-shaped design, making it tough to fit in a standard pocket, Some control buttons are a bit too small to be used comfortably, Battery life is well below average, Built-in flash unit only can be opened manually; there's no popup flash...
The new PowerShot G5 X is based on the same sensor system as the G7 X. It uses a 1-inch sensor (BSI technology) with 20MP and a professional 3:2 aspect ratio. Compared to the G7 X, the G5 X has a lot of new and additional features, including a high-resolution electronic viewfinder with 2.36 million...
The PowerShot G5 X is a well-designed and easy-to-use premium compact that takes good quality photos and videos and offers a nice EVF and LCD on which to compose them. It's subpar battery life, so-so lens and sluggish continuous Raw shooting keep it from being a top choice.
The Canon G5X proves to be a more user-friendly and enhanced version of the G7X. With many more controls, a vari-angle LCD, an OLED viewfinder, a flash hot shoe, and additional enhancements to the camera body design and layout, the G5X takes what's good about the G7X and puts it in a more...
-
+
Versatile wide-angle 4.2x zoom, Fast maximum aperture (f/1.8-2.8), Very good image quality for its size, particularly when shooting RAW, Good dynamic range in RAW files, RAW files slightly soft out-of-camera, but sharpen nicely in post, JPEG sharpening not too overdone, but can leave edge artifacts...
-
-
Soft corners at wide angle at any aperture, due to strong distortion correction needed, Soft corners at telephoto when not stopped down, Localized flare issue at wide apertures and close distances (same as G7X), Purple or red fringing when wide open around heavily backlit objects, Dreadful Auto...
Sluggish performance and a more limited feature set than similarly priced competitors hold the Canon PowerShot G5 back from being a leading contender among its peers.

The Canon PowerShot G5 X has a great viewfinder and a comfortable shooting design for serious photographers.

It can be frustratingly slow, with a short battery life.
The Canon PowerShot G5 X is the bigger brother of last year's G7 X prosumer compact camera.The G5 X uses the same 20.2-megapixel 1-inch image sensor and 24-100mm f/1.8-f/2.8 lens as the G7 X.
It has a great touchscreen (and only a touchscreen – no EVF option) with a simple set of controls and buttons. That said, Canon left the mode dial in place atop the camera for quick access to all of the shooting modes.
Canon's newest point-and-shoot finds its niche.
This is the first PowerShot camera I've owned. It's smaller than it appears in photos, but takes outstanding photos. The electronic viewfinder is excellent, bright and detailed. Controls similar to Canon DSLR's and menus are easy to follow. Well built and easy to carry.
By definition this is referred to as a point & shoot camera - but, it's far more than that. I would recommend it to anyone that likes great pictures.

Feature set very close to the much more expensive Canon 70D. I'm not qualified to write a full review so let me say that I have a Canon 5D full frame digital & this little guy/gal impressed me. I actually like using it very much.

Short battery life between charges. That can be solved with a spare battery. Proper settings can also extend the battery life a good bit.
I have a Canon 40D, and like many amateurs, I got to the point where I wished I could get the same quality of shots without having to lug a SLR around.Well now, I have something I can sling around my neck (this Canon G5X) that takes beautiful images and crisp and clear 1080P videos.

Great pictures and videos.Compact, but feels rugged - not flimsy and fragile.Flash works great for as little as it is.

Setup items can be hard to find.
About 7 years with heavy use my Canon G10 decided to retire. After some very useful collaboration with Paul C and others at the Abt photography department I got the G5X as replacement and couldn't be happier with the choice.

Easy To Use, Good Image Quality, Good in Low Light, Large Clear LCD

Limited Zoom
I bought this canon G5x from HK few months ago. OVERALL I think Canon G5x is ok. I bought it because. I needed a small camera to walk around. So i don't have to carry my old canon 40d dslr.I suggest any G5x users buy the external flash light.
I own my camera for 2 weeks. It's overall use is great. fast and quic AF, very bright lens. solid construction, good hensling. only one think is inacceptable - battery lif. is use eye level viewer - so it should consume not to much power.
