Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a very promising lens - it's one of the fastest prime lenses available for Canon's EF mount and is clearly targeted at photographers who require that extra f-stop and are willing to pay premium for it. However, the lens did not quite live to all my expectations.

There’s no doubt that the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM , ( ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ) ( review ) is Canon’s best 50mm lens and an excellent performer by any standard. The fast aperture is ideal for work in low light, where focus is fast and positive.

For many years, a fixed focal length (prime) 50mm lens was standard for film SLRs. Although 50mm lenses are not nearly as popular as they used to be, there are still many people who want one of these in their kit.

This unique standard lens from Canon costs around £1235 currently and has a super-bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, silent ultrasonic focusing and professional-grade weather sealed construction.

This speedy full-frame 50mm f/1.2L ($1,400, street) fills a vacancy left by the demise of Canon's 50mm f/1.0L four years ago. The company's only L-series normal lens, it's the fastest normal AF lens on the planet. Hands On

EF 50mm f/1.2L USM The superbly built EF 50mm f/1.2L lens provided modestly sharper images with better out of focus blurring (bokeh) at f/1.4 and f/2 and was much more resistant to flare and internal reflections than the EF 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Gary Wolstenholme review the super-bright Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens.

  • +

Good centre sharpness from maximum aperture, Unique ability to control depth of field, Excellent build, Weather sealed

  • -

Expensive, Clarity towards the edges not at the same level as the centre

The Canon EF 50 mm f/1.2L USM is a new, expensive lens which belongs to the high-end L series. In the case of such devices I should have had problems with finding anything which could be put into the cons section.

  • +

high build quality and very solid barrel,, very good image quality in the frame centre from f/1.8 aperture upwards,, decent image quality at the edge of the APS-C sensor,, slight distortion on the smaller sensor,, almost invisible coma in the APS-C sensor corner,, negligible astigmatism,, good work...

  • -

weak image quality at the edge of full frame,, noticeable chromatic aberration,, distortion on full frame could have been lower,, high vignetting on full frame,, bad price/quality ratio.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L left rather mixed feelings here at Photozone. It was able to convince in the APS-C scope but on a full format DSLR its weaknesses became much more obvious.

Roughly two-and-a-half years ago Canon replaced the legendary EF 50mm f/1.0L USM with the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM. While its predecessor was the fastest (and one of the most expensive) mass-production lens ever made, by sacrificing two thirds of a stop, Canon was able to reduce the price of the lens...

It is hard for me to buy a Canon (6D and this 50mm F1.2) after using many Nikons (one of them was the F4) in the past 30 years. However, took a snapshot of my wife on the first day and both of us were sold.

In 2012 I rented a 50L and fell in love. Everything I read was true. Magical images, great AF, smooth bokeh, great flares. Then I bought one, and returned it. A year later bought another one and returned it. A year later tried a third and it was better than the first two so I kept it.

Magical images, if you can get a good one. Accurate auto focus, great weight, nice build quality.

I've tried to purchase this lens four times, and can't get a copy that doesn't have ridiculous purple fringing.

After owning the f/1.4 and f/1.8 models, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase the f/1.2 model. I am beyond pleased- I wish I had done this earlier. This is a superior lens and my go-to for almost everything. Excellent quality. Love the weight and feel of the lens as well.

I've had this lens before and as soon as I sold it I began to regret it, so I purchased another one.Aside from its ability to capture very low light exposures, this lens excels because of the "look" it renders. It was designed to be shot wide open and that's where it shines.

Excellent! Wonderful pictures. A little scary at first because of the price, but happy with my purchase.

If you are looking for a 50mm lens with beautiful bokeh, good contrast/color at wide open, and you want to use f1.2, for low light photo AND video, this is the one for you.

I bought this lens to use on my Canon 5D2. Feels like a well balanced fit on the camera. Produces sharp images with great background blur. Have had it a week and have no even used the flash with it yet. Expensive - but you get what you pay for....

Build quality, Sharpness, f1.2, low light shooting without flash

this lens allows you to enter a whole new world of photography, night photography without flash. i have tried both the 24-70L and the 17-55m and felt very limited once the sun starts to set or moving in doors. IQ is stunning, especially the colors.

  • +

-sharp, sharp, sharp ( between 1.4- 2.8) -construction is top notch -bokeh is silky smooth (was never a priority in the past for me, but after seeing the results thats all i think about -superb in low light situations

  • -

-price, price, price (will not be buying any new lens soon, but maybe i will not have to with this lens) -attention getter (might be a pro for others)

Yes it is expensive but you really won't remember that once you use the lens. The speed allows for many more good shots without the use of any flash. Highly recommended.

  • -

    Expensive, Heavy
