The Canon EF 50mm f1.2L USM is a prime lens with a standard focal length of 50mm and the joint-fastest focal ratio in the Canon lens catalogue - a position shared with the EF 85mm f1.2L USM.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM is a very promising lens - it's one of the fastest prime lenses available for Canon's EF mount and is clearly targeted at photographers who require that extra f-stop and are willing to pay premium for it. However, the lens did not quite live to all my expectations.

There’s no doubt that the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM , ( compare prices ) ( review ) is Canon’s best 50mm lens and an excellent performer by any standard. The fast aperture is ideal for work in low light, where focus is fast and positive.

This unique standard lens from Canon costs around £1235 currently and has a super-bright f/1.2 maximum aperture, silent ultrasonic focusing and professional-grade weather sealed construction.

This speedy full-frame 50mm f/1.2L ($1,400, street) fills a vacancy left by the demise of Canon's 50mm f/1.0L four years ago. The company's only L-series normal lens, it's the fastest normal AF lens on the planet. Hands On

EF 50mm f/1.2L USM The superbly built EF 50mm f/1.2L lens provided modestly sharper images with better out of focus blurring (bokeh) at f/1.4 and f/2 and was much more resistant to flare and internal reflections than the EF 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Used for portraits and landscapes. SOLID build. Beautiful contrast and bokeh. Back focus issues that you'll read about all over the Internet are legit. I had the lens for over a year, the focusing was a little frustrating, and no I'm not an amateur. Heavy.

"If I seem edgy, I want you to know, I never meant to take it out on YOU!"I haven't purchased the 50mm f/1.2 yet, but that's why I'm reading the reviews by those who have. The conclusion that I've reached is that MOST don't know what does what. First, there is NO SUCH THING as a "Narrow DOF".

I upgraded this lens from my 1.4 for a trip to France where I assumed (correctly) that flash would not be permitted in museums and churches. I am extremely happy with the images captured; I have great images inside the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris while all those around me were struggling with...

  • +

Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

    not cheap!

I've owned this lens for 3.5 yr. After many many practices, finally I am getting result I really love. This is a great portrait lens. For my taste, I only shoot closed subject when I want to do an abstract type of art work.

If you are looking for a 50mm lens with beautiful bokeh, good contrast/color at wide open, and you want to use f1.2, for low light photo AND video, this is the one for you.

I bought this lens to use on my Canon 5D2. Feels like a well balanced fit on the camera. Produces sharp images with great background blur. Have had it a week and have no even used the flash with it yet. Expensive - but you get what you pay for....

this lens allows you to enter a whole new world of photography, night photography without flash. i have tried both the 24-70L and the 17-55m and felt very limited once the sun starts to set or moving in doors. IQ is stunning, especially the colors.

  • +

-sharp, sharp, sharp ( between 1.4- 2.8) -construction is top notch -bokeh is silky smooth (was never a priority in the past for me, but after seeing the results thats all i think about -superb in low light situations

  • -

-price, price, price (will not be buying any new lens soon, but maybe i will not have to with this lens) -attention getter (might be a pro for others)

Yes it is expensive but you really won't remember that once you use the lens. The speed allows for many more good shots without the use of any flash. Highly recommended.

Amazing pictures. f1.2 is something I can appreciate. Though it is pricey. 50mm 1.8 vs 50mm 1.2, a $1500 difference? It can be hard to justify for that price difference.

Good: Solid build. f 1.2 . Best bokeh. Quiet. Bad: Not sharp as other lens. Price. A little heavery.
