For those looking to upgrade from an existing EOS DSLR, unless it’s a EOS 500D or earlier triple-digit EOS, it’s hard to recommend. In most respects its identical to its predecessor – the Canon EOS 650D – with the exception of a couple of cosmetic changes and a real-time preview of Creative Filters,...

  • +

Responsive and well-implemented touchscreen; Light body; Fast AF system; Effective Auto Lighting Optimizer; Noise control; good video capture

  • -

Can feel a little plasticky in places; Not suited to action photography with limited AF points for tracking and a small buffer

The Canon EOS Rebel T5i is essentially the same camera as its predecessor, and it's still a solid performer.

  • +

Fast to start and shoot. Sharp, articulated touch-screen LCD. Compact. Nearly silent video autofocus when used with STM lenses. 4fps shooting. Good image detail at high ISOs. Fast autofocus.

  • -

Small pentamirror viewfinder. Very limited burst shooting in Raw mode. Video autofocus is choppy with non-STM lenses.

Announced on March 21, 2013 and available in the marketplace this past April, the Canon Rebel T5i becomes the “new flagship model” of the Rebel line. Canon followers will be excused if they are suddenly imbued with a strong sense of deja vu, as the previous Rebel flagship, the T4i, first became...

  • +

Good still and video image quality, 5 fps continuous shooting rate, Quick write speed with appropriately high performance memory media, Light and compact

  • -

Lacks weather sealing of one direct competitor, 95% viewfinder coverage makes precise image framing problematic, Seems to clip highlights a bit more than competition

The Canon EOS 700D / Rebel T5i is an upgrade to the 650D almost in name only, but still combines very good image quality with a comprehensive, well-designed touchscreen interface.

  • +

Comprehensive touchscreen interface that is intuitive and efficient, High image quality with good balance between detail and noise reduction in JPEG output, Good subject tracking AF in viewfinder shooting mode (compared to mirrorless competition), 5 fps with ample buffering in JPEG-only mode, Very...

  • -

Slow 'hybrid AF' performance in live view and video modes (compared to mirrorless competition), Slightly higher noise levels than its peers, Default dynamic range lags a bit behind its peers, Using flash with Auto ISO enabled results in ISO 400 even in bright light conditions, Cannot configure...

Recommending the T5i for still photography is a no-brainer. It’s easy to use, takes quality images and has enough technical headroom so you can spread your creative wings if you care to.

In conjunction with the release of a few more EF-S STM series lenses back in March (2013), Canon also announced the new flagship model to its entry-level EOS Digital Rebel DSLR series, the T5i .

  • +

Image quality is very high, Extremely fast performance in Viewfinder mode, Very fast start-up, Articulated, high-resolution LCD is nice feature for shooting with a tripod, Touchscreen LCD makes it easy to control camera for beginners, Ports included for both HDMI and microphone, Full HD video output...

  • -

Not enough improvements from Rebel T4i, Autofocus works too slowly in Live View mode, creating significant shutter lag, Although autofocus in video mode is improved from past Rebels, it's still slow, Autofocus illuminator lamp only works when the flash is engaged, Camera's on-screen menus should...

The Canon EOS Rebel T5i is an entry-level DSLR following the classing Rebel line with an 18 MP sensor featuring built-in Phase-Detect AF. This is a light yet moderate-sized camera which is comfortable to hold and a relatively good number of direct controls, although a single control-dial.

  • +

Low image-noise, Good metering system, Accurate autofocus, Exposure-Priority Live-View implementation, Generally responsive, Good construction, Relatively light

  • -

Some image softness, Limited dynamic-range, Too few AF points, Small and dim OVF, Instant-Review delay, Buttons too flush

14 October 2014

Adjustable swing-out display has touchscreen for easily navigating shooting options, even in sunlight. But the Live View focus, flash cycling, and general navigation feel sluggish by comparison.

  • +

Display swings out for capturing a variety of angles, Great image quality

  • -

Live View focus seems sluggish, Some physical controls are awkward to navigate

The Canon Rebel T5i was always going to be a controversial camera. With so little changed, you can understand why photographers would react with some confusion. Seen in light of the handgrip issues Canon faced with its earlier T4i -- which the company was quick to fix, we might add -- the followup...

  • +

Less expensive than the camera it replaces, 18-55mm STM lens is very quiet, and above average image quality for a kit lens, Solid body with no panel flex or creak, Good ergonomics, as we've come to expect from the Rebel line, Touch screen is great for settings changes and selecting a focus subject,...

  • -

Only one control dial, LCD monitor is a bit glossy for our liking, Dynamic range not as good as competing models, though HTP helps, Auto and Incandescent white balance very warm in tungsten lighting, Higher than average distortion from the 18-55mm STM lens, Moderately high to high levels of...

With its excellent balance between price, performance, size and image quality, the Canon EOS 700D is a camera that fits in perfectly with its market segment by offering a competitive and very attractive by Photographer’s fans, but budget-conscious.

  • +

Excellent image quality, Multi-touch screen adjustable, From 5 fps burst, Excellent ergonomics, Good-quality video.

  • -

Slow AF in Live View, The keys feel cheap.

The camera quality and the lenses are pretty good. The tripod is very weak. Not good for stabilizing in windy atmospheres. Camera bag is very small. Only fits the camera. I would recommend get the camera and lens from an offer without the bag and tripod and buy those separately.

Great all-around lens and body. Does well in low light for a zoom lens with decent all purpose range. This lens will be used 90% of the time and then will shift to specialty purpose high power zoom lens when needed for sporting events for the kids events.

Just got my new Canon Rebel for Fathers' Day. First impression: a heck of a lot of capability for a very nice price. I'm a long time SLR Film guy, who finally recognized that 1) Digitial SLRs are not just a fad, and 2) film is going away, so I've been pining for a digital camera for a while.

  • +

huge number of features and capabilities. very fast image capture

size of icons is a bit small for older eyes!

This is an update to my post from 12/16 now that I've had an opportunity to play with the camera. This is my first DSLR. I've always been a Canon fan. In my film days I used a Canon AE-1 Program. This package provided everything I needed to get going. Recent previous cameras include PowerShots.

I have family members with more expensive cameras that pale in comparison to this one. It far exceeds my expectations. People frequently ask what camera I use after viewing pictures. It is a great camera.

  • +

I have never seen any other camera compare to this. The picture quality is fantastic. This camera pics up things I can't see with my own eyes. Colors are spectacular. This is an easy camera to use. The lens makes a perfect match for this camera.
