The Canon EOS SL1 is a good DSLR, although a bit pricey – you can pick up a kit for $649 and $799 with an additional 55-250mm zoom. Yet, one of its main draws is its small size and it really doesn’t deliver on that score since it’s just a shade smaller than a classic DSLR like the Nikon D3300.

  • +

Quality Canon 18MP stills, Good 1080/30p videos, Very fast, accurate focusing

  • -

Grip may be too small for some, Mono onboard sound, Quality falls off after ISO 800

The Canon EOS Rebel SL1 / 100D is an ideal camera for consumer users looking for better image quality, with improved Live View and movie-mode autofocus in a small body. Its touchscreen interface offers a modern set of digital controls in a camera that will still feel familiar to more traditional SLR...

  • +

Very small and light with good grip for small to medium-size hands, High ISO shots are quite usable, even above ISO 6400, Excellent LCD and responsive touchscreen, Special coating minimizes fingerprint smudges from touchscreen use, Hybrid AF II / STM lens combo is noticeably improved for live view...

  • -

May be too small for those with larger hands, Grip may be insufficient for use with larger lenses, AF illuminator integrated into flash (must have flash engaged to use it), Flash produces red-eye in Night portrait mode, Non-STM lenses struggle in live view and in movie servo AF, Default dynamic...

While the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 is a perfectly reasonable entry-level dSLR, you can get the same photo and video quality in a smaller body for the same money (or less) by opting for a mirrorless interchangeable-lens model.

  • +

Sized for small-to-medium hands, the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 delivers the expected photo and video quality in a comfortable and well-executed design.

  • -

    It's pretty slim on features.

Based on the success of previous Canon EOS Rebel DSLR cameras, you'd expect the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 to be a very nice model. And you'd be right -- the Rebel SL1 provides some excellent features and performance speed in the entry-level DSLR camera market, and its improved autofocus system is...

  • +

Smaller size and lighter frame is definitely noticeable versus other DSLRs, Seems to have a sturdy feel and good build quality, SL1 remains easy to hold with well-sized right-hand grip, despite small camera body, Extremely fast performance in Viewfinder mode, Image quality is very good versus others...

  • -

Having an articulated LCD would have been a nice feature, No built-in wireless capabilities, AF illuminator sometimes struggles in extreme low light situations, Slight changes in menus between Viewfinder and Live View modes may confuse some photographers, Battery life is below average versus other...

Bigger is better Americans say. That bigger is better. But in this photograph, slogan may have more or less sense depending on which characteristic is taken into consideration. If you talk about, then it is obvious Megapixel race to see who offers the highest resolution.

  • +

Excellent ergonomics thanks to details like the proximity sensor that turns off the screen when not in use, Image Quality.

  • -

Impossible to replace the memory card and battery, Auto ISO with a minimum amount of time the shutter cannot be configured, Cannot customize the functions of the controls.

The Canon SL1 is the smallest and lightest DSLR that we've ever reviewed, delivering DSLR performance and image quality in a body that's almost as small as today's mirrorless camera models. Its features and image quality rival those of its bigger siblings, the Canon Rebel T4i and T5i.

  • +

Extremely compact and lightweight for a DSLR; Delivers good image quality that's virtually identical to the Canon T4i/T5i; Accurate and relatively fast autofocus with improved Live View and Movie Hybrid CMOS II AF; Full 1080p HD movie recording; Better-than average kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6...

  • -

Still not as compact as most mirrorless cameras; Slightly worse than average dynamic range and high ISO performance; Poor battery life., Despite its reduced size, body not as small as most compact system cameras because it still has to accommodate the DSLR mirror, LCD is not articulating (like it is...

If impressive image quality in an extreme light weight & small size but still fully-capable, full-featured DSLR camera appeals to you, the Canon EOS Rebel SL1 / 100D has your name on it.

First I’d like to thank Canon UK for the loan of an EOS 100D while I was recently in the UK. The EOS 100D and the EOS SL1 are identical, but if you look at the EXIF data in some of the images in this article you will see the camera recorded as the EOS 100D.

There is nothing bad about this little camera. I look at video as a joke feature (no DSLR does it well), and everything else works great. I own and use my 5D Mark III every day, and depend on the 5D Mk III's C1, C2 and C3 memory modes to let me reset my camera instantly for my preferred settings for...

Most of the time, when people think of a Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, they immediately think of a fairly large and bulky device. However, during our time when reviewing the relatively diminutive Canon EOS 100D, many were actually quite surprised when we told them it was actually a...

If you are looking for an excellent and small DSLR, look no further. This is the smallest DSLR that I have seen. I bought it for my wife who has a very difficult time with my full-frame cameras. She loves the size and the weight. The kit includes two versatile lenses in the 18-55mm and the 75-300mm.

This is currently the best crop sensor camera you can buy right now.

  • +

Image quality is superb, Loads of familiar features, Full manual control / RAW shooting, Fast; there's no appreciable lag that I notice yet.

  • -

Max shutter is 1/4k, No HSS on the built-in flash, so can be limiting for fill-flash in bright sun, Flash compensation limited to +/- 2 stops.

Great camera but many of the accessories were off brand and I did not end up using them. The only things I actually used were the SD cards, camera bag, and tripod. Don't waste your money on all the unnecessary items.

I bought this camera when it first came out. I used it very rarely. My friend borrowed it for one year. Then, 3 weeks ago my daughter and I went to Bali, Indonesia and I brought this camera. Whoa! I didn't know how good this camera is.

This camera is easy to understand. It has autofocuing for those who are unsure of the settings, but overall picture quality is amazing for an everyday camera. If you are a professional photographer the higher level camera is also available.

I got into photography couple months, i'm not complaining with this camera it is good, and there are many options you can do with this camera when taking photos or filming. worth the price, yea, definitely!

  • +

    - Easy to grip despite the small size, plus the light weight is nice if you are someone who carries a lot of things around - Awesome pictures (quality kicks ***) + the 18-55mm lens that comes with it is great for starting - Auto focus is exceptional, but I find myself using MF frequently anyways -...

    - Battery life is not that long (about 3-4 hours), had to buy an extra 2 batteries. Battery drains quickly ESPECIALLY when filming. - Uhh.. idk can't really think of anything else, it does what it camera does!

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who just wants a beginner camera. It is definitely worth the money. The only complaint is that the zipper (the longer part that you use… I don't know what you call it) on the inside of the case broke the first time I used it.

From OVF to EVF to OVF. My exploration of the digital world started with the coolpix 990 and the canon 20D. And after many nice and some not so nice experiences (see my gear part) I'm back in the OVF camp.
