“The cheap and compact EOS RP may attract users Canon's competitors are ignoring.”

  • +

Affordable price, Excellent autofocus and metering, Great JPEG image quality, Good high ISO performance, Fully articulating touchscreen

  • -

Some purposefully truncated features, Video feels like an afterthought, Unimpressive RAW image quality

Despite its billing as a full-frame camera for the masses, the affordable Canon EOS RP can be a very able performer when used to its full potential. It’s a good example of a conundrum photographers often face when shopping for a new camera: “Do I devote my budget to the best camera available, or...

The Canon EOS RP is the most affordable new full frame camera to date, whether DSLR or mirrorless. It gives you the 26 Megapixel sensor from the 6D Mark II, delivering attractive JPEGs out-of-camera, a fully-articulated touchscreen that’s ideal for vlogging, microphone and headphone jacks, and...

While its competitors are going to great pains to create increasingly advanced – and increasingly expensive – high end full-frame mirrorless cameras, Canon is catering to crop sensor consumers who are looking for a full-frame upgrade that won’t break their back or their bank balance.

  • +

Svelte, lightweight body, Fully articulating screen, 4K video, Aggressively priced

  • -

Body feels small for big RF lenses, Loses the R’s sensor shutter, 1.6x crop + no Dual Pixel AF in 4K, Miserly battery life

The Canon EOS RP's specifications aren't exactly exciting, but don't let that fool you - it's a likable little camera with engaging controls, good build quality and it produces excellent JPEGs.

  • +

Newer users getting into full-frame for the first time, existing Canon users looking for a second camera body, anyone looking for a travel-friendly full-frame camera for casual use.

  • -

Those looking to shoot high quality video, power users who want the most out of their Raw files, and those who routinely shoot fast action and need faster burst speeds.

The Canon EOS RP is a good upgrade for those within the Canon ecosystem as well as those looking to pick up their first full frame or mirrorless camera. It is versatile, but not intimidating. It is compact, but not underwhelming.

It’s a bold, yet factual statement: testing the more affordable Canon EOS RP is getting a first-hand look at the future of Canon cameras. While not the flagship mirrorless (that distinction belongs to the Canon EOS R), it’s still a big move forward for the famed camera maker.

The new Canon EOS RP is a full frame camera that shoots 4k and has a fully articulating screen and it’s only $1300. It does have its flaws, but for that money, its a great buy. We got our hands on the camera before the announcement and put it through the paces to evaluate it for you!

As I said in the Canon EOS R review, we are looking at the future and I like what I see. With its ultra-low cost, the EOS RP brings the future to a huge audience.

A few months back, I reviewed the Canon EOS R . While it’s not the perfect mirrorless camera, it is a great first outing for Canon. In the shadow of the EOS R, we’re now looking at the more budget-friendly Canon EOS RP .

I like the RP’s small size and easy access to all functions. Easy transition from my 70DI purchased the RP with the 24-105 mm f4 lens. Photos are sharp at all focal lengths using this zoom lens.I am disappointed that it does not have a faster FPS.I use the optional adapter for my EF lenses.

Let me start by saying this just might be the best buy camera of today. I have owned aprox 15 canon digital cameras and i still presently have the 6D which is a favorite. In the beginning, i had serious problems with the color/white balance of the RP.

Great camera if you're using it for what it's meant to be. The image quality is great with the EF adapter and a nifty fifty. The camera is very comfortable to hold, though anyone with medium to large hands should probably add on the grip extension.

  • +

Stills, compatability with EF lens, portability

  • -

Dynamic range, viewfinder could be improved

I love this camera and have been taking tons of photos for commercial and hobby work. I don’t shoot a ton of video but do really enjoy its features. One thing i really want badly for this camera is a battery grip with capture button as well as mount feature etc like for the 5d series!

Hi all, just sharing a short and brief review of my RP. Few weeks ago I sold my 6Dii and EF 24-105L, and since 2 weeks I'm the happy owner of the RP+RF 24-105L I know we have countless reviews on the net about all the technical specs (including the number of card slots) but I wanted to focus more on...

I upgraded from a 70D to the RP and WOW am I amazed! I shoot mainly landscapes, portraits, travel photography type stuff, and my cat. No sports, no video. For me this thing is perfect.Pros: Classic Canon controls made it a breeze to switch over.

Often compare this camera to my Canon 5d Mark iii, have to admit the EOS RP really holds up! I enjoy taking it on hikes without having the weight of the larger camera. The RF 24-240 lens is amazing, I am very satisfied with the quality of the photos.

My first full frame since film (Finally). Really like how small and light it is (replaced a 70D). So far, results have been great. There's a lot to learn, but it's pretty intuitive.
