This is a really lovely lens that has been a positive pleasure to test. It is fairly expensive but this is a professional zoom and is priced accordingly. As such it cannot be considered to be a bargain but neither is it unreasonably positioned within Canon’s line-up.

Canon offers five different 70-300mm zoom lenses in its product lineup. Why so many? They obviously think this is a popular and practical focal length range and I happen to agree. I even own one of them myself—the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM—but the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM tested is the mac daddy...

The good news is that Canon has announced six new EF series “L” lenses (or at least two new lenses and 4 upgrades). The bad news is that none of them are cheap.

For a consumer type zoom, Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is a surprisingly solid lens. Image quality is quite good and in the shorter zoom range even rivaling that of the more expensive L grade lenses.

Handling and features Canon have given the 70-300mm range an L-series makeover and as a result this lens sports silent autofocus, with full-time manual override, weather sealing, optical stabilisation and tougher build quality than you might normally find on a lens covering this range.

This long, Tele stabilized zoom replaces Canon's popular 75-300mm f/4-5.6 full-frame IS lens, the industry's first IS/VR lens, introduced in 1995. The new model delivers better image stabilization (to three stops instead of two) and a wider zoom range.

I have been using a really inexpensive zoom I got several years ago and the images were ok, but kind of soft. Not sharp. I have been using this lens now for about a month, and I love it. It's sharp at both ends - 70 and 300.

I was impressed with the reach of this lens. It focused quickly and quietly. The lens did not need a zoom lock and held its focal point no matter the lenses angle while holding it.

  • +

Quick focus and very smooth zoom.

  • -

Heavier than I thought a variable aperture lens would be.

I was looking for a lens that could take shots of wildlife from a distance. This lens certainly fits the bill and the IS helps in low light. I was also looking at the 100-400mm lens but the negative comments about its barrel focusing system pushed me towards this one.

I got this for my wife as a gift, I've had experience with canon 6D, 60D, T2i etc.. and have really liked the L lens quality. This one did not disappoint. Except my wife says it's too heavy for her (she only started recently with DSLRs coming from a P&S).

L lens quality and build Weather sealing Sharp in all focal lengths IQ is awesome Image stabilization is great, Hand held shots comes out nice.

  • -

f/4-5.6 aperture. Not great for low light a bit heavy to lug around all day. Does not come with a Tripod lens mount/collar (as I believe canon was aiming for mobility, hand holdability for this lens)

I bought this lense couple months ago, it is one of the best lense I've used. It works very fast, and quality is superb and totally takes a beating. It is the perfect travel lense for me because of the wide range of zoom. I really wish the price was a bit lower though...

I love this lens I use it on a daily bases. It's great for when I'm taking pictures of little league baseball. The quality is great. It does make the camera a bit heavier I have a Canon 70d so the body is a little heavier than most canons but it's so worth it.

For the price, this lens is good. Has decent focus and a decent speed. For the price, the only thing I wish was available was that I could an extender with it. However, that is only available for the L lenses.
