The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens is the go-to telezoom for many a pro shooter; its excellent optics make it a clear Editors' Choice.

  • +

Sharp from edge to edge. Optically stabilized. Constant f/2.8 aperture. Includes hood and tripod collar.

  • -

Some distortion at 70mm. Heavy. Expensive.

Overall this is a great lens but there’s no escaping the fact that it’s also a costly one. If you are a demanding Canon user for whom price is not the decisive factor then this is a lens that you’ll want to own.

  • +

    Fantastic peak resolution

  • -

    Expensive!

Canon's update to its professional fast telezoom may look much the same on the outside, but internally it's been updated to give image quality that's quite simply the best in its class. Effective autofocus and image stabilization systems, plus full weather sealing, round off a compelling package.

  • +

Exceptional image quality, Superb build quality, including dust- and water-sealing, Highly effective image stabilization, Excellent autofocus and manual override

  • -

Relatively harsh rendition of out-of-focus areas of the image, Somewhat susceptible to flare with direct light sources in or close to the frame, Inconvenient design of tripod mount ring (can't be detached without taking lens off camera)

As of 2015, I prefer the Canon 100-400mm IS L II because it has more reach and it focuses more closely. As of 2011 when I wrote most of this review before the 100-400 II came out, the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II was a favorite lens of thousands of professional photographers because of its fabulous...

Perhaps the most versatile of all moderate tele zoom focal lengths, the 70-200mm or thereabouts range is a hallmark and standard-bearer for many optical companies. Being a constant aperture (fast) zoom, this lens opens up numerous focusing, depth of field and perhaps as important low light shooting...

A year ago Canon unveiled an upgraded version of one of its crown jewels: the 70–200mm f/2.8L IS lens. The original, debuting nearly 10 years ago as one of the first f/2.8 lenses with IS, was fast, plus sharp at the wider focal lengths. It was heavy, though, and at $1,700 (street), expensive.

The latest incarnation of Canon's 70-200mm f/2.8 lens sports fast silent ultrasonic focusing, weather sealed construction and a four stop image stabiliser and costs around £1800.

A favourite of the pros, this lens has just been updated. Can it match up to its hefty price tag though? Of all the pro lenses, the 70-200mm f/2.8 is probably one of the most popular. It’s range of telephoto focal lengths make it perfect for reportage style portraits and many sports.

I am an amateur aspiring to go pro, and only just getting to grips with this lens, but I have to say Wow. Really. So versatile, well built and confidence inspiring, you won't want to take it off your body. Until recently my only L lens was a kit 24-105 f4 and it has performed impeccably.

-Sharpness is razor through entire range -Even using at f2.8, it's sharper than any lens I own (50 1.4, 85 1.8, 25-105L, etc.) -IS is very quiet when kicks-in (Mark I model was very loud!

-Pretty heavy lens, you will need to use a strap that goes across your shoulder to the other side. A straight hanging neck strap will probably be a problem over time, maybe even just an hour or so.

Canon has bossed it again. I'm a full time wedding , commercial and portrait photographer. The 70-200 2.8L 2 is a beast. The improved IS and optics are steller. The DOF on this lens is beautiful.

I've read the reviews and wondered if this lens is as good as everyone says it is. It is. It's an amazing piece of equipment and it's almost impossible to take a bad picture with it.

  • +

    Sharp, fast, bokeh, looks great

  • -

None really. Some complain it's a little heavy but I usually carry a Canon 100-400 so this isn't a big deal for me.

After doing lengthy comparisons to other quality 70-200mm lenses through numerous review sites, forums and renting, the Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM was my choice, hands down. This lens has superior sharpness I couldn't get anywhere else and during high speed motion, it was second to none.

Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, quiet operation

I use this lens as a supplement to my bigger lenses (400mm and 500mm), mostly for wildlife photography. The lens is super sharp. While a bit on the heavy side, it is easily hand holdable.

An awesome lens. This has to be on of the best lenses in the world, if not the best. AF is fast and tack-sharp, eand detail is astonishing. 1:1 crops look amazing, with very little distortion. A great lens for portraits, and if you are using a cropped sensor, then you have a lot of extra reach.
