Available at a fraction of the price of its f/1.2 brother, how does this sub-£300 prime compare. Read the WDC Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM review to find out.

    Fantastic MTF figures

    AF is slightly unrefined

The Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM may be based upon a 37-year old optical design, but its performance in our studio tests clearly shows that it's not giving up yet. Sure the hairs are beginning to grey a little, and Sigma's new young pretender can outmuscle it comprehensively at wider apertures, but this...

  • +

Excellent image quality when stopped down, Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration, Fast and accurate autofocus with full-time manual override

  • -

Distinctly soft and 'dreamy' at wider apertures (F1.4-F1.8), Bokeh chromatic aberration, most visible at wide apertures, Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (essentially disappears by F2.8), Somwhat susceptible to flare

Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM should probably be considered the best alternative among Canon's four 50mm lenses (in terms of value for the money, overall performance and capabilities). While not as fast as its more expensive 50mm f/1.2L USM variant, this lens performs as well (if not better) pretty much...

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Canon's mid-range 'nifty-fifty'. Standard lenses such as this are popular due to their lightweight and bright maximum aperture.

  • +

Decent resolution across the frame when stopped down., Good resistance to flare., Low vignetting at maximum aperture.

  • -

Barrel distortion may be noticeable in critical applications, Quality towards the edges doesn't really excite until stopped down to f/4

Canon's 50/1.4 is a bit heavier than the 50/1.8 but it gives you simultaneous AF/MF because of its USM focusing motor . It is one f-stop slower than the 50/1.0 but much lighter weight and less than one-sixth the price.

I've always used a zoom lens as my walk-around lens. My favorite walk around lens is still Canon's 15-85 IS on my 60D. It has a great range with pretty good image quality. One day, I decided to try our walking around a botanical garden with just this 50mm fast lens.

Great lens for the retail price. Don't get the 1.8fm.. 1.4 is worth the extra coin.

I am an enthusiast who is in the process of moving into the semi-pro caetgory. I bought the lens in 2012 just before spring portrait season was about to ramp up. The focus was fast, and the images were generally very good.

  • +

    Good Paperweight, Recyclable Materials

  • -

    Not Durable, Slow Focus

The 50mm f/1.4 has improved my photography so much! I was shooting on a Canon t5i with the 18-135 mm STM lens but this prime lens made such a difference. The clarity and bokeh in my pictures really stand out now. Definitely worth the money and my go-to lens for any type of portrait photography.

    Depth of field, Boken, portraits

Used very rarely for about 24 months. It spent most of its time in a professional case. It was very well cared for. The focus is now not working. No manual focus. No auto focus. This highlight an extremely poor build quality on this lens that is well known, and manufacturing on this lens has not...

    excellent paper weight

    Slow auto-focus, Poor build quality

This lens feels solid at first for being so short but it always breaks on me. The focus ring has stopped functioning properly twice. I will package it back up and send to canon for repairs as soon as I get a chance. I have taken my best photos with this lens but it gets a 0 for durability.

Overall good for the money. Honestly can't say its worth the extra 150 or so dollars over the f/1.8 version.

  • +

Good Sharpness, Great Bokeh and good for portraits and product photography.

  • -

AF hunts A LOT. Soft at f/1.4 but corrects at f/1.6 and up. even though its USM it is still very noisy in my opinion and doesnt seem to be able to focus at the 1.5' as advertised the closest I can get is 3'. I might have gotten a bad copy, stil testing it may send it to Canon.

Love it. If you take portrait shots (close range pictures) this lens is perfect!!! It's basically... the "go to" lens for this type of shooting and is a "must" for any photographer! Love it!!!!

I have owned Canon 50 1.4 a couple of times, and each time, it approximately break about at the same area > AF stop working because I drop the lens. Last time, I didn't drop it hard, only on carpet and not high, but the lens is not very well built and just stopped working.
