If you can get past the price, the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens will blow you away in most other regards. This is simply one of the most incredible lenses available and one of the ultimate action sports lenses.
There's not much to add here that the technical report doesn't make abundantly clear: for the price this lens commands, it provides the ultimate telephoto lens experience, with quality second to none, a feature set with a learning curve, and a suitcase to carry it in.
Combine a 400mm full-frame prime lens with a fast maximum aperture of f/2.8 and there are two things you can be assured of – size and weight. The mighty Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM measures a whopping 163 x 343mm (484mm long with the lens hood fitted) and tips the scales at 3.85kg.
Everyone has a subjective view on these things. I love this lens! It is exactly what one would expect from a top end Canon telephoto. So why the 4 stars and not 5? The price. I know creating an f2.8 400mm lens is a marvel in optical engineering.
I rented this lens for 1 week this summer when I had some cash in my pocket and I was looking for a hand-holdable lens to mount on my 7d that offered more reach than my 70-200 for nature/birding. After quite a bit of internet research I was torn between the 300 2.8 II and the 400 2.8 II.
The long wait was definitely worth it. I just got the lens and it matches my expectations based on Canon's MTF curves. Each of my Canon bodies (5DMkII & 7D) require microfocus adjustment to extract full sharpness down to f/2.8.

Price, Even Less Weight would be nice
Great lens, light for the capability, very easy to use. I have not yet used the stabilization; however, I know that works well. I did shoot the solar eclipse and some distant eagles. Highly recommended for wildlife and astronomical events. Works excellent with 1.4x and 2.0x extenders!
I was looking for an option for sports and wildlife. Was not sure I wanted to go with a Prime lens but I'm really glad I did. The image quality and sharpness of this lens can not be beat!
This lens is just AWESOME!!! Worth every dollar spend.
I am a bird photographer and already own the EF 800mm. This lens is as excellent as the EF 400. They are both heavy to carry especially if you are 63 yrs and 5" tall. It is all worth it!! The pictures come out tack sharp.
I mainly use this lens for aviation capture to get in 'close' to the subject. The images even with a 1.4 extender attached are staggering. I recently purchased a 7D II & combined with the above combination is just amazing & gives you just shy of a mouth watering 900mm f4.
