The EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM is a flagship lens for Canon in many ways: reach, speed, usability and price.
The Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM is a great lens, although at a very high price from which there is no escape. It handles well, it has that fantastic f/2.8 aperture, it is teeming with features. If you need it and can afford it, then Canon users have an incredible 400mm option to consider.
Excellent, even sharpness, Virtually no CA, Low distortion, Lighter than similar lenses, Fast f/2.8 aperture, Large range of shooting options, Lovely bokeh, Image stabilisation
Understandably high price, Lightest, but still quite heavy, Large lens
I used the Ver II for 5 years with great success. I loved that lens with exception of the weight. I am 64 years old and hand hold frequently and the weight was starting to be a burden.I decided the 2.2 lb. reduction would be a huge help with the Ver III so I purchased one.
I purchased this lens as soon as it came it and I have been using it for various sports events. I have been shooting varsity high school soccer games 3-4 times a week at different times of the day.
Following a medical death sentence I chose to enjoy the time I had left by purchasing any lens I felt would improve my knowledge and photography. To date I have not been disappointed.
I own the 400 2.8 IS v1 and borrowed this lens to use at the Indy 500 this year. It was tack sharp and 5.6 pounds lighter than the version I own. The weight savings alone makes this worth the upgrade.
And Im a 220 lb 69 year old weakling. I do all hand shooting. It is so light I dont even realize it is there. Feels like my 14mm lens. Credit the movement and rebalancing of the weight towards the shooter for this.Takes great pictures. No complaints. Got everything I thought I was getting and more.
This lens is just outstanding. I have been spending most of my time testing with the 1.4x III and 2x III extenders. The 2x is just outstanding on this lens (800mm). I only have the 1dx Mark II so results may vary on other bodies. It is the best performing lens with the 2x I have used so far.
The price tag on this lens will clearly scare someone away but trust me when I tell you it is worth every cent! I love this lens and it’s a true work horse! I am heavy in my sports season and currently shooting varsity soccer. I have tested this lens and it has never failed me once!
