Understandably high price, Lightest, but still quite heavy, Large lens
I used the Ver II for 5 years with great success. I loved that lens with exception of the weight. I am 64 years old and hand hold frequently and the weight was starting to be a burden.I decided the 2.2 lb. reduction would be a huge help with the Ver III so I purchased one.
I purchased this lens as soon as it came it and I have been using it for various sports events. I have been shooting varsity high school soccer games 3-4 times a week at different times of the day.
Following a medical death sentence I chose to enjoy the time I had left by purchasing any lens I felt would improve my knowledge and photography. To date I have not been disappointed.
I own the 400 2.8 IS v1 and borrowed this lens to use at the Indy 500 this year. It was tack sharp and 5.6 pounds lighter than the version I own. The weight savings alone makes this worth the upgrade.
And Im a 220 lb 69 year old weakling. I do all hand shooting. It is so light I dont even realize it is there. Feels like my 14mm lens. Credit the movement and rebalancing of the weight towards the shooter for this.Takes great pictures. No complaints. Got everything I thought I was getting and more.
This lens is just outstanding. I have been spending most of my time testing with the 1.4x III and 2x III extenders. The 2x is just outstanding on this lens (800mm). I only have the 1dx Mark II so results may vary on other bodies. It is the best performing lens with the 2x I have used so far.
The price tag on this lens will clearly scare someone away but trust me when I tell you it is worth every cent! I love this lens and it’s a true work horse! I am heavy in my sports season and currently shooting varsity soccer. I have tested this lens and it has never failed me once!
