This is a very good lens. It has a useful IS system that allows handholding for long exposures, and less vignetting and quality fall-off at the edges than expected. If the ability to handhold your camera is more important than achieving a shallow depth of field, this model might be a better option...

If you are looking for an extremely sharp ultra-wide angle zoom lens, the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens should be at the top of your consideration list. This lens delivers prime-grade image sharpness right into full frame corners and it has the overall performance to match, including AF speed...

The 16-35mm Æ’/4L IS USM occupies an interesting niche in Canon's line up of wide-angle zoom lenses. Some may question the usefulness of having IS on a wide-angle lens, but it does come in handy both for movie-making, and for when you don't want to lug around a tripod.

This new ultra-wide angle zoom lens should replace Canon's venerable 17-40mm f/4L optic in their line up of professional lenses. It sports a zoom range of just over 2x and a constant maximum aperture of f/4.

Outstanding sharpness across the frame from maximum aperture, Excellent build quality, Relatively lightweight, Reasonably low distortion, Low CA, Image stabilisation, Fast autofocus, Dust and moisture resistance

  • -

Distortion is wavy at 16mm, Far corners remain darker than the image centre, even when stopped down to f/16

We have no doubts: the EF 16–35 mm f/4L IS USM is currently the best ultra-wide angle zoom lens in the whole Canon line-up. It is also noticeably better than its rivals from other producers such as the Nikkor AF-S 16–35 mm f/4G ED VR or the Tokina AT-X PRO FX SD 17–35 mm f/4 (IF).

  • +

solid casing and high build quality,, excellent image quality in the frame centre,, very good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, acceptable resolution on the edge of the full frame,, imperceptible longitudinal chromatic aberration,, low lateral chromatic aberration,, proper correction...

  • -

very high vignetting level on full frame,, weak performance against bright light,, distortion level at 16 mm on full frame could have been lower.

You could forgive most photographers for thinking that a 16-35mm lens would be intended for less-than-full-frame cameras. After all, a focal range such as this would provide a sensible, if slightly odd, 25-56mm on an EOS EF-S APS-C body.

This is an upgrade from the original 16-35mm f 2.8. I was a bit skeptical that the f4 could be sharper. So, after extensive testing and comparisons using a Canon 5D MK IV and a MK III, I'm pleased to find the image quality is significantly better.

Performs well in the center and the edges, fast quite/accurate focus and competitively priced given its performance. Great landscape and city walk-around lens. IS may be useful for video (haven't tried that, or night sky photography (f/4) yet).

    None so far.

9 March 2017

The perfect travel ultra-wide. Hard to fault the image quality in any way, except the typical "not as magical" on the long side. The weight/size balance on a 5D is about ideal. We moved on to the epic 16-35L III for stills and kept the F4 model around for video projects.

Super sharp wide open with no noticeable fringing. IS works well. The first great Canon 16-35.

    It's not a 2.8

25 March 2017

Mated to my 5D MkIII, this lens surpassed the clarity from edge to edge of my 16-35 2.8 II, is lighter, and costs less--a lot less than the 2.8 III. You may note all five stars here, and the reason is simple: it's an excellent lens, purely so.

While the IS on this lens is not an essential item if you're primarily interested in landscapes, it can be very helpful for candid shots of groups of people.

Outstanding quality from the lens is all all I have to say. It was a great purchase for me the quality and sharpness of my photos are outstanding.

I am so pleased with the purchase of this lens. I have been using ever since I got the lens. It is razor sharp throughout the frame. This is going to me my new walk around baby.

I'm interested in landscape, portrait and close up photography and this lens does all really well. Close up and macro photographers inevitably miss out on the context of the subject (particularly insects), and the ultra-wide angle of the 16-35 provides an interesting perspective, while allowing a...
