This lens is the more modest cousin of Canon’s L-series version, which includes both image stabilisation (IS) and ultra-low dispersion (ULD) glass.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM is the newest addition to the manufacturer's lineup of macro lenses, and is the second 'Pro' grade (or 'L') classified macro lens besides the EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM.

Canon delivers everything that a photographer could want in a 100mm macro lens: ultrasonic focus motor, internal focus mechanism, non-rotating front element, floating optical group for consistent image quality at different magnifications, rugged construction, and reasonable price.

More than three years after Nikon’s groundbreaking 105mm f/2.8 VR macro , Canon has shot back with a $1,000 (street) fullframer, its first 1:1 close-up lens with image stabilization.

On more than one occasion, my wife and I have considered upgrading to Canon's L-series macro lens. However, every time we pull this out of the bag, we are blown away by the results. Would image stabilization be nice? Of course it would be. Even still, this is a great lens.

I AM USING THIS MACRO LENS ON A SONY NEX 7 CAMERA WITH A METABONES ADAPTER FOR MACRO AND PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY. I FIND THE LENS TO BE STURDY AND WELL BUILT. BOTH PORTRAIT AND MACRO PHOTOS CAME OUT IN VERY SHARP FOCUS. THE SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD FOR MACRO CAN GET VERY SENSITIVE.

Consistent Output, Durable, Nice Bokeh, Rugged, Strong Construction

beautiful picture quality. Takes stunning macro images and can be used as a telescoping lens in a pinch. Highly recommended for any serious or armature photographer. I'm rather armature but have included an example pic of one my dart frogs.

The short take: I have gotten outstanding macro photographs of subjects like insects and plants using this lens. Here are tips on what has worked for me:For macro work, I ALWAYS set the lens to manual focus, because the autofocus mechanism just cannot "find" extremely small subjects.

I had earlier problems with focus, but now my biggest gripe is no lens hood supplied, and Canons tripod ring mountfor this lens, is far dearer than other brands ([*]I`d expect). I have one of these and it works very well, cost me all of $11.00 australian. from Hong Kong of course.

Lens Creep, Poor in Low Light
