In short, this is clearly a very impressive lens in all respects. It is also keenly priced. Yes, for only about £150 more you could buy Canon’s very capable 24-105mm f/4 zoom, which is a better all-rounder, but the 100mm macro is not meant to be an all-rounder: it has been conceived for one specific...

The heritage of Canon’s new EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens dates back to the 1980s when Canon began researching methods to compensate for camera movement. They introduced their first stabilized lens for SLR film cameras in 1995.

Just occasionally a lens turns up which delivers such implausibly good results in our studio tests that I have to go back and repeat everything, double checking all settings to make sure I haven't done something wrong.

  • +

Superb optical quality, Fast, silent, and accurate autofocus; full time manual focus, Highly effective image stabilization (for longer subject distances, at least), Solid build, including dust and water sealing

  • -

Hybrid Image Stabilization still not particularly effective at macro distances, Precise manual focus at 'portrait' distances slightly tricky, Very expensive compared to non-stabilized alternatives

Lens expert Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Canon's EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens. This 100mm lens from Canon costs around £779 and provides life-size magnification at its closest focus, image stabilisation, weather-sealed construction and an ultrasonic focusing motor.

  • +

Build Quality, USM focusing, New Image Stabilisation system, High resolution, Useful Focus limiter switch

Supplied lens hood is a little deep for use at close distances, Focus breathing can make composition tricky

Quality glass, durable, and consistent top performance. Expensive until the return on investment is formed. It's not my go to lens but like my wife's jewelry ROI, my ROI begins in just owning an outstanding lens and then seeing the results from a few great photos which adds immeasurable...

Initially, I was hesitant to spend this much for a lens but if you are into taking photos of flowers and insects, this is highly recommended. I have a friend who also has this lens and I have seen the remarkable details in photos she has taken of bees, etc.

I have used this lens for over 2 years now, with both crop frame and full frame DSLR's (T3i/5d,6d) - it is one of the best pieces of Canon glass that I own, if not the best.If you do a lot of outdoor macro/closeup work, as I do, I would heartily recommend that you have one of these mounted as your...

I bought this lens a couple of days ago. This is my first true macro lens. To get to know the lens I have taken dozens of test photos with my EOS 6D. I setup a tripod and took photos of some small nick-nacks with the 100mm F/2.8L and then attached the 24-105mm F/4L for comparison.

The focus ring turns only about 135 degrees from infinity to max close focus, so the manual focusing is very touchy especially at high magnification. There is an element in the lens that rattles and can visibly be seen moving around when the lens is not on the camera.

This lens has blown me away. It is my first IS lens from Canon. I own a 85 1.2L and it is slow to focus and forget about hand hold as it has no IS. This 100 2.8L macro is super sharp, fast auto focus and accurate as well.

One of the best lenses I've ever had. Very sharp, quick and not too heavy. I have tried Tamron 90mm VC USD too (300 euros cheaper) but taken Canon. Works much better on 7D and 5D. In addition, works fine with 1.4x Kenko Pro extender (blue dot) and has tripod mount (optional)

You can use this lens for almost anything: macro, portraits, everyday shooting. It is super sharp, the sharpest lens in my kit which includes the 70-200 2.8 IS, 85mm 1.2, 50mm 1.4, and some others. It's a very lightweight lens too, compared to some of the L series.

  • +

Super sharp, image stabilization works well

  • -

Somewhat expensive, but considering this is without a doubt, THE sharpest lens in my kit, it's worth it.
