Need a lens for your kids? The 18-55 f/4-5.6 IS STM is a great option for them for a couple of reasons. One is that the small size makes this lens ideal for kid-sized hands and the light weight keeps photography fun for them – and fun for longer periods of time.

In short, the need to achieve a low price-point has compromised performance slightly but for users who want an affordable, yet versatile, point-and-shoot lens the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is worthy of consideration.

    Fantastic value for money

  • -

    Poor manual-focusing experience

The EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 looks destined to carry the flag as the kit lens sold with virtually every Canon dSLR over the next few years (and that counts as an awful lot of lenses), so it really needs to perform well in the face of some impressive competition.

  • +

Much improved optics compared to Canon's previous non-IS 18-55mm kit lens, Effective image stabilisation, Very compact and lightweight, Good macro performance

  • -

All plastic construction, Rotating front element a pain for filter users, Narrow and very loose manual focus ring, Near-useless lens hood

At $175 (street), this digital-only wide-to-normal standard zoom offers Canon EOS Digital Rebel shooters image stabilization for only about $35 -- and 1.3 ounces -- more than Canon's non-IS kit zoom.

Like its precursor, the 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens can only be used with Canon's DLSR cameras that have APS-C sized sensors. Most people who purchase this lens will acquire it with a camera body, where it adds approximately AU$100 to the base price.

I am very pleased with the fact that the time has come when kit lenses, added to cheap digital cameras, can produce good quality photos and don’t have to be replaced immediately after the purchase with something better.

  • +

very good image quality in the frame centre at shorter focal lengths,, even and good frame edge performance,, chromatic aberration well-controlled at longer focal lengths,, slight astigmatism,, relatively quick and accurate autofocus,, good price/quality ratio.

  • -

plastic barrel and mount,, chromatic aberration at 18 mm focal length and bigger aperture values could have been lower,, significant distortion at 18 mm,, high vignetting at the widest angle,, limited accessory kit.

Supplied as a basic kit lens with entry-level Canon DSLRs, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens covers a focal length range equivalent to 28.2 to 88mm in 35mm format. This is a good choice of focal lengths for general photography and will suit subjects as diverse as scenery and portraiture.

The resolution capabilities of the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is amazing even based on the EOS 50D. The lens resolution may no longer reach the limits of the sensor resolution (as it did on the EOS 350D) but the quality level remains very high throughout the zoom range.

Canon has maintained the position that image stabilization functions best when installed in the lens . According to Canon, "The advantages of IS in the lens are, first, that each IS system can be designed and optimized for its specific application, yielding a level of performance unattainable by the...

Good as a kit lens, but I wouldn't buy it otherwise unless I had no other choice. I spent almost no time upgrading mine to a 15-85mm.

Light & Small, Sharp, Good IQ

Slow and noisy AF, filter ring rotates, feels like a toy

My perfect budget DSLR kit would include this lens for everyday use and macro photography, the Canon 55-250 zoom lens, and a 50mm prime lens for low light. Get a set of 58mm filters to protect your lenses, the filters are much easier to clean, and breaking a filter is a LOT cheaper than breaking...

Note: This lens is the kit lens that comes with the Digital Rebel XSi and a few other Canon cameras. The lens has a decent zoom, and is easy to use, even for beginners. Image stabilization works well and is quiet. Cheap.

  • -

Sometimes this lens has problems focusing in low light. The focus ring is actually the end of the lens, so for beginners it is a little tricky to find. Aperture is not as fast as I would like, but it certainly works for low light photography, as long as you have a good tripod.

OEM brand lens - works great and was the lowest price around.

This lens is a kit lens but it's still very good, especially for a kit lens. Here are some more detailed pros and cons from my use of this lens:Pros:-Very light, granted it is mostly plastic-Sharp photos (especially in RAW mode)-Decent walk around lens-Image StabilizationCons:-Build quality isn't...
