Canon's 10-22mm is a 2.2x zoom, offering potential great value for money. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens review sees just how good it is in the real world...

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is an interesting ultra-wide zoom lens. At least for those willing to invest in an EF-S lens. The lens has some shortcomings - build quality leaves room for improvement, the lens does not come with a lens hood (surprise to me considering its price tag).

The ultra-wide group to which this lens belongs has gone a long way towards overcoming the biggest drawback of cropped sensor dSLR’s, that of lost angle of view at the wide end.

  • +

Good optical quality, Nice size and weight, No unexpected nasties.

  • -

Price, Restricted fitting (Won’t fit D30/60 or 10D), Lens hood is an optional extra.

With framing equivalent to a 16-35mm zoom on a full frame body, the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Lens provides EF-S compatible camera body owners with the ultra-wide angle focal lengths so often missed on this small-sensor format camera. EF-S is Canon's moniker for Small Image Circle.

Canon’s ultra-wide offering is very impressive, with excellent edge sharpness for this type of lens. There is a small amount of chromatic aberration at the edges, but this can be easily fixed in RAW editing software such as Adobe Lightroom.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 offers a wide-angle zoom option for both EF and EF-S fit cameras. Boasting an Ultra-Sonic Motor and full manual focus control, does it compare well against established 3rd party options?

  • +

Excellent resolution in the centre at most apertures and focal lengths, Light weight, Good build quality

  • -

May be prone to flare and no lens hood is supplied, Falloff in resolution towards the edges at 22mm

ePHOTOzine lens guru, Gary Wolstenholme shows us the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 zoom lens. An ultra-wide angle zoom lens for use on Canon's EF-S compatible cameras, which gives an equivalent angle of view of a 16-35mm lens on 35mm cameras.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is a very sound package thanks to a combination of very decent build quality and very good if not impressive optical results. The resolution is very high at 10mm and 14mm and still pretty good at 22mm. If anything vignetting at wide-open aperture could be better.

It's only suitable for smaller APS-C-sized sensor cameras but sharpness, contrast and colour quality prove to be unbeatable

The Canon EF-S 10-22 mm is a specific lens targeted for wide angle lovers and for those not wanting the fish-eye class of lens distortion. APS-C detector digital camera owners had to wait long for the opportunity of photographing at a wide angle of 100deg or more.

  • +

great image sharpness in the center of the frame,, very well corrected astigmatism,, very well controlled distortion (as far as straight line breaking is concerned), solid functioning and quiet autofocus,, sturdy build,

  • -

large vignetting in the whole focal length range and even after stopping down the lens., chromatic aberration specially visible for 10 mm focal length, slightly too large coma

I bought this lens 11 years ago for a 20D. I took it to Yosemite and I could not have used a better lens. I took it back to Yosemite in 2016 with a 60D. The pictures were certainly clearer, but the lens was perfect for this environment.

My favorite wedding photography lens for 10 years and I used it at over 500 events. I dropped it many times, dumped it in streams, and got the front element gunked with champagne, ice cream, and dog saliva. How I loved thee.

  • +

Super fun. Sharp at 10mm with little distortion. Fast and accurate AF in bad light. Rugged.

  • -

Soft at 22. Purple fringing visible with higher resolution APS-C cameras.

Put this lens through the paces at a Christmas party I went to, was the only one there that had a camera so I'm glad I had it. Using a Canon T5i with the lens, every pic was very sharp. Very happy with the outcome, hopefully I will get more chances to take more pictures of work gatherings.

This lens is the reason I keep my 7D body after upgrading to a 5DM3. If I want to shoot landscapes I prefer the images from this lens over my 24-105L by a long shot. You can't go wrong with this lens.

  • +

    Wide, great color, great sharpness

  • -

Won't work on a full frame body. Of course it's really 16mm on the wide since it only works on crop bodies.

I did test shots with this, 3rd party competitors and other camera system maker lenses in same range. This lens was better and with the Canon 70-200s reason for me to commit to the Canon system for digital.

  • +

Superb wide angle shots compared to the others I tested. It has held up to what ever has been thrown at it.

I am very impressed with this lens. I didn't realize just how wide-angle this lens was. At 10mm, I can stand just a few feet in front of a 13-story building, and get the whole thing in the picture, from the entrance to the top of the building.

I just finished 3 weeks of shooting New Zealand landscapes on a Canon T1i. The 10-22mm ultrawide got a workout - and performed flawlessly. One minor beef is vignetting with stacked filters - and some conventional 77mm CPLs. Easy to solve with an low profile filter.

Light, fast, square, and VERY wide

This is currently my most used lens. I use it mostly for taking video on my T1i. Because of the ultra wide angle I can get everything even in small rooms.I have a 1 yr old and he doesn't stop running around so I can just stick this on a tripod and let it run without having to follow him around the...
