Canon's 10-22mm is a 2.2x zoom, offering potential great value for money. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens review sees just how good it is in the real world...

  • +

    Extended zoom range

  • -

    Lack of MTF consistency

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM is an interesting ultra-wide zoom lens. At least for those willing to invest in an EF-S lens. The lens has some shortcomings - build quality leaves room for improvement, the lens does not come with a lens hood (surprise to me considering its price tag).

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm equips budget to mid-range Canon DSLRs with ultra-wide angle coverage. While the equivalent coverage of 16-35mm sounds extreme, our Gallery shows the range can be surprisingly useful in practice.

  • +

Extreme wide angle coverage., Low geometric distortion., Fast, quiet and internal USM focusing., Relatively small and light.

  • -

Lens hood not supplied as standard., Modest macro capabilities., Sigma 10-20mm worth considering., Incompatible with full-frame bodies.

The ultra-wide group to which this lens belongs has gone a long way towards overcoming the biggest drawback of cropped sensor dSLR’s, that of lost angle of view at the wide end.

  • +

Good optical quality, Nice size and weight, No unexpected nasties.

  • -

Price, Restricted fitting (Won’t fit D30/60 or 10D), Lens hood is an optional extra.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM (16-35mm equivalent in 35mm parlance) was designed to cover the APS-C format, specifically the EOS 20D and both EOS Digital Rebels (plus future APS-C models). Canon's EF-S lenses (S = Short Back Focus) are physically matched to these cameras.

The Canon EF-S 10-22/3.5-4.5 is a very good lens. There is a little corner softness wide open at 10mm, but overall the image quality is excellent. Those who claim that this lens shows "L" quality performance may not be wrong.

I originally bought this lens to use for a specific project for taking indoors pictures of rooms in houses for some friends, but quickly realized its potential for portraiture as well! Now this lens is in my standard kit for all portraits and weddings, too.

Well worth the price of admission. This lens is big glass, so some might find it a bit on the heavy side, but not me. The "Digital Photo Professional" software package that comes with most Canon DSLRs can remove the fish-eye distortion from images saved in the RAW format by using lens data...

  • +

This lens was designed specifically for cameras with APS-C image sensors. The maximum f/stop ranges from f/22 at 10mm, and f/29 at 22mm. Images have been very sharp. Colors are rich. Good in low light. Uses a 77mm filter size. Has USM, ultra-sonic motor, and focuses extremely fast and super quiet.

  • -

The lens has a noticeable fish-eye effect when the zoom is set for 10mm. The fish-eye effect becomes less and less noticeable as you zoom out to 22mm, where it seems to be completely gone.

I bought this 10-24mm wide angle lens because I heard so many photographers from the tutorials I have been watching, state that this is one that they usually carry in their bags for landscapes.

  • +

Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Lightweight, Strong Construction

  • -

Blurry Focus, Lens Creep, Too Much Noise

I use the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM mainly for waterfalls and small cascades in the mountains of the south east US. With a APS-C camera sensor this focal length is superb. While there is some distortion at the 10mm end for my purposes it is not objectionable.

  • +

    sharp images, nice contrast

  • -

not wide aperture, some chromatic aberration

I purchased my first 10-22mm in late 2005, soon after it was released. I fell in love with it as finding a wide angle for the 20D was next to impossible. It's not perfect, but it is well built and does its job.

This lens is the reason I keep my 7D body after upgrading to a 5DM3. If I want to shoot landscapes I prefer the images from this lens over my 24-105L by a long shot. You can't go wrong with this lens.

  • +

    Wide, great color, great sharpness

  • -

Won't work on a full frame body. Of course it's really 16mm on the wide since it only works on crop bodies.

The ultra wide zoom has been a mainstay of pros, especially photojournalists, since the early 1990s. Sweeping landscapes, operation in tight quarters and ease of hand holding are hallmarks of this range.

I did test shots with this, 3rd party competitors and other camera system maker lenses in same range. This lens was better and with the Canon 70-200s reason for me to commit to the Canon system for digital.

  • +

Superb wide angle shots compared to the others I tested. It has held up to what ever has been thrown at it.

  • -

    None.
