The built-in microphones for the Vixia series are not really very useful for anything beyond home movies - the person holding the camera is louder than the person they are talking to on camera.. This shotgun microphone has a much better chance of picking up action in front of the camera.
Highly suggested that if you are outdoors you use the furry windsock. Even the slightest breeze effects this more than the builtin mic. But the windsock is extremely effective. You may hear slight wind noise during a wind gust, but otherwise the audio probably would have been unusable.
The reason I give it 3 stars was because of not being able to see a noticeable difference in recording with this vs. recording with the built-in microphone in my camcorder (Canon HFS100). I am not sure if it is because the built-in was good or because this external microphone is not that good.
The sound quality of this mike for all purposes is so much better than the built in mike I use it all the time. There is good suppression of noises to the side and back but if someone is talking right behind you it will still drown out the people you really want to hear in front.
I Bought this mic 3 years ago, The hot shoe must have gotten bump some how and I did not know it, I shot a couple of events and I noticed a small clucking sound in my videos. It only happen when I walked with the camera. So I figured it out what was wrong. I called canon.
If you're going to shoot outdoors on windy days, this is a compact solution that will fit very well in a small video bag along with your camera - small enough to always have it with you. It's not going to replace a sennheiser and boompole, but it's a reasonable tool, and I'm happy with my purchase.
This mic is perfect for my Canon G30... No need for mic batteries or a wire. This mic turns on when the camera turns on and mic level is adjustable on screen.
All built in camcorder mics suck. It's a fact. If you want to put it in your pocket, it can't have a good mic. The Canon HF series is no different. I bought this with my Canon VIXIA HF200 HD Flash Memory Camcorder with 15x Optical Zoom .
Really neat to direct mount onto the hotshoe and it picks up very faint sounds from across the room. I wouldn't want to use an aftermarket one for my Canon Vixia G20 for fear that the whole feature set won't function properly. I'll be recording concerts so the sound quality is important.
Works great. If you have a conversation between the cameraman and someone 6 feet away, the voices are about the same volume. Cuts out wind and side noises.
