The Audio-Technica M40X deliver a reliable bass, mid, and treble response for neutral listening. They don't have much soundstage because of their closed-back design, but their well-balanced sound will still satisfy most listeners.
If you do want to buy these set of cans, do know that they are very neutral, and meant for studio monitoring. I find it boring for casual music listening, but of course you can always EQ some frequencies and YMMV.

For neutral studio monitoring., Above average technicalities., Foldable., Quite cheap for the price., Detachable cables., Very pleasant and listenable sound signature. Not bright or fatiguing. Comfortable. Killer for the price.

Clamp/earpads very uncomfortable., Can be boring for those who want more bass/more fun signature., Average soundstage width., Propetiary audiotechnica cable, so hard to find other aftermarket upgrade cables.
You can't beat these headphones for the money. They have a nice overall sound...the midrange is warm and not bright. I listened to the m50x but felt the midrange was too bright and irritating at times. I like the sound of the m40x much better...they also sound better than my grado sr80's.

This is gonna be picky because I'm used to the Avantones. Compared to those, these MT40s are a touch on the upper-bassy side, and a little less clear on the top end. Sound separation is pretty good, though the stereo image (which is never gonna be ideal on any cans) isn't nearly as wide as I'd like.
These headphones produce a great sound...just the right amount of lows, high and mid range. They are made for mixing sound to get a realistic mix. They are very comfortable too, not heavy and no pinching of the ears.
First of all I will like to start by saying that these headphones are very light , you don’t get tired even after using them for a long period of time , I been using them for mixing and they work pretty well for my taste and the type of music I record, which is mostly instrumental.
After listening to everything I can get my ears around, I think the M40x's are the best all-around sounding closed back headphones you can buy. (without being filthy rich)
these are pretty good headphones all in all. the highs could be a bit better, but i was having a hard time finding a pair that my husband was happy with as far as bass. these have plenty of bottom without going too far. and the price is really reasonable for what you're getting.
These sound good, are comfortable, and come with a long straight cord which is nice for our application. Biggest complaint is that the ear muff flips and rolls in different directions which becomes annoying with trying to get them on your head or stored away for the night.
After listening to everything I can get my ears around, I think the M40x's are the best all-around sounding closed back headphones you can buy. (without being filthy rich)
They work as you would expect for the price range. I was pleasantly surprised by them.
