The fourth-generation Amazon Echo speaker takes the sound quality and smart home hub capabilities of the Echo Plus and puts it in a new round package.
-
+
As powerful as the Echo Plus, Strong bass for the size, Built-in smart home hub
-
-
High frequencies don't get quite as much finesse as they could, Alexa can still be awkward to talk to
![]() |
It’s six years since the first Amazon Echo arrived, igniting a whole new category of smart speakers and making the idea of talking to a disembodied voice a little less weird, and now Alexa is getting some new, spherical digs.
-
+
Impressive musical performance, Plenty of bass, Smart home hub built-in, Alexa wake-word almost never fails
-
-
Midrange is still the weak spot, Are you a Google household or an Amazon one?

The Amazon Echo (4th gen.) is a great smart speaker for the price as long as you live in an Alexa world. If your smart home devices are all compatible (which most are) and you don't mind the new orb-like design of the speaker then you'll likely be very happy with what this has to offer.
-
+
Good build quality, Price, Strong bass for its size, Alexa is compatible with tons of smart home products, Quality built-in mic is good at picking up the wake word
-
-
Round design is nice, but not for everyone, Alexa app is confusing at first, No YouTube compatibility by default

“A charming new design paired with Alexa's smarts makes the Echo (4th Gen) a standout contender.”

Amazon's flagship speaker gets better and smarter ... all round.
-
+
New design, ZigBee / Sidewalk radios, Stereo sound, Simple setup, New tap to snooze feature
-
-
ZigBee pairing hit or miss, Waiting on new features, Bass not much better

Smart speakers may have taken us a step closer to ambient computing, but adding new features to the latest iterations seem to have become a struggle for the makers. The freshest product of this toil is the 4th generation Amazon Echo, whose USP is its spherical design, though Amazon is also promising...

It's round. It's also got good bass and improved overall audio quality. Adds built-in Zigbee smart home hub capability.
-
-
Privacy is still a concern. Not truly omnidirectional. Besides audio and design, most upgrades are very incremental.

The Amazon Echo (4th gen) continues to impress as a smart speaker thanks to Alexa, and this is the best-sounding, most capable design yet – thought we're not 100% sold on the new design.
-
+
Sounds really nice, Built-in Zigbee hub, Lots of audio options
-
-
Shape takes some getting used to, The cheaper Dot might suit you better, Very Amazon focused
![]() |
Don’t be fooled by its playful design; the new Echo means business, delivering a weighty sound and full command of your smart home Expansive bass in a small design Lots of smart features Classy build and finish Slightly underwhelming treble Not fully omnidirectional
![]() |
Amazon Echo (4th Gen) is comfortably the most fully-featured Alexa smart speaker yet. With greater sound to rival the Google Nest Audio , the tried-and-tested functionality of Alexa, a stylish new design and Zigbee integration, Amazon has nailed its flagship speaker in 2020.

I bought this to replace my aging 1st gen Echo and Zigbee smart hub with a single device. It performs it's Zigbee functions admirably so that makes me happy, but it is really hard of hearing compared to my first gen Echo.
-
+
Some functionality even when internet down
-
-
not quick to respond to wake up word

I was skeptical at first to get this thinking I wouldn't listen to it much, WRONG, so glad I did. I listen to music more now, even linked it to our SiriusXM account. Also started listening to Podcasts. Love the reminders that I get, and I can't do without the shopping list now. Great Purchase.

It’s a very nice device I love the color, the only thing I don’t like is that the cord is white, I think the cord should be the same color as the device. also there is a stand you can buy for ECHO 4TH GENERATION, but it only just sits on the top of it and it could move and fall over if you touch it...

This has a very different shape from other devices....it's kind of bulky looking. Also the sound comes across with too much bass and notifications are difficult to see since they come from the bottom of the unit. Haven't connected to smart devices so unable to rate.

I set up an echo or dot in every room and we are in the learning curve right now. We love it and it's fun to play with. It can be a bit frustrating because of all the different smart things you have to set up and if you don't get the same brand you can have 15 different apps (so to speak) to program...

Great sound, compact, attractive design. Only gave it a 4 star because it has to stay plugged in. To make it portable you have to purchase another product.

Surprisingly good sound from this little guy. Pretty happy with the quality and the ease of use.

Setting up a house for a family member for an intercom setup with their phone blue toothed to it. That way they can intercom if need be or call for help if need be. Waiting on the other 3 units coming to finish the setup but they are enjoying even just this one for the ability to ask it questions,...
