Asus is doubling down on Max-Q with its second Zephyrus notebook equipped with GTX 1070 Max-Q graphics. The asking price is a bit more manageable this time around, but the hardware shortcomings are hard to ignore despite the strong graphics performance.

  • +

quieter fan noise than other super-thin gaming notebooks, relatively low GPU temperature when under load, very high performance considering the size, excellent CPU Turbo Boost sustainability, attractive chassis design, Thunderbolt 3

  • -

no SD reader, RJ-45 port, secondary HDD, or Optimus options, unique design sacrifices comfort if not working on a flat desk, spongy keyboard keys; no dedicated NumPad or Macro keys, average display response times for a gaming notebook, very warm CPU temperatures when under load, system fans are...

Asus has created a surprisingly slim Nvidia 1080 gaming laptop in the Zephyrus. It's expensive and has a few design quirks, but it's also very portable and just plain fun to use.

  • +

The super-slim design of the Asus Zephyrus hides excellent gaming performance and a powerful Nvidia 1080 graphics card. The hidden kickstand vent provides cooling while not interfering with portability.

  • -

The large cooling vent feels flimsy when opened. The display tops out at standard HD resolution, and the misplaced touchpad on the far right side is tough to get used to.

The Asus Zephyrus is one of the lightest, slimmest, and most powerful gaming laptops on the market today. Built from the ground-up to support an Nvidia GTX GeForce 1080 graphics card with ultra-slim Max-Q design, does the Zephyrus serve as a test case for a new kind of gaming laptop?

  • +

Thin and light, Excellent performance, Stylish design

  • -

Very poor battery life, Too hot to use as a laptop

The Asus ROG Zephyrus packs outstanding performance in an ultrabook-like form factor, accomplishing what we previously thought was impossible. Plus, you won't get judgemental stares if you use it in public! This laptop is sexy.

  • +

Solid build quality, Amazing aesthetics, Outstanding performance for a thin-and-light laptop, Color and grayscale accurate display with great contrast, Unique thermal dissipation approach

  • -

Awkward touchpad placement, Performs much warmer than a traditional gaming laptop, Poor battery life, Thermal panel is flimsy, Expensive

Performance summary: The ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 is the first NVIDIA Max-Q Design notebook to arrive in the lab and it is a truly unique product. It’s the best performing 15.6-inch notebook we’ve ever tested and it is much thinner and lighter than other notebooks in the same performance category.

Asus' $2,699 ROG Zephyrus marks the beginning of a new era in gaming laptops, one where power isn't sacrificed in the name of portability. Packed into the Zephyrus' svelte frame is a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU, a once-impossible feat made reality, thanks to the company's new Max-Q design.

Gaming laptops usually translate to big and bulky machines that normally is placed permanently on a desk. I’ve owned several of them previously and unless I’m shifting homes I usually leave it at my desk in my room.

  • +

Excellent design, Incredibly powerful, Great display and sound output

  • -

Poor battery life, Keyboard and trackpad design may take a little getting used to

10 September 2017

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501VI-XS74 utilizes Nvidia’s Max-Q approach, and the result is a cleverly designed package that sets a new bar for high-end, thin gaming laptops. The design is aesthetically exquisite, but bears the portability that makes the new approach worthwhile.

  • +

Incredibly thin GTX 1080 laptop. Innovative, quiet design. Aesthetics from the future. Excellent 120Hz G-Sync display.

  • -

Middling battery life. Only 1080p resolution. Oddly-placed touch pad.

1 August 2017

The Asus Zephyrus is unique at the time of this post, as the only thin and light 15-inch laptop with a GTX 1080 in it. It has some flaws, most of them inherent to a computer with this kind of form-factor and some caused by the choices Asus made, but overall this gets a good grade because I think it...

The best and most expensive purchase I have made for a computer. BUT worth the money, 100% would buy again. This thing is a beast and looks amazing. The build quality is top notch and the packaging it came in was solid and impressive. OC the MaxQ 1080, 225core/445 memory, firestrike score of 6100.

Fast boot - Gsync and 120hrz -IPS display - Very slim - Quite while not gaming - Great build quality and design - GTX 1080 plays everything - Samsung memory and SSD - Solid packaging, really nicely done Overall I am 100% satisfied with this machine.

  • -

    - No space for 2nd SSD in machine - Can only upgrade one stick of RAM (8GB built in, 8GB removable, would need to buy a 16GB stick 2400mhz to max out) - Where is the mouse? there is a space for the ROG mouse in the box but it was empty... guess the NA versions don't get it?

This laptop is a great mix for Gamers and mobility. 15.6" is a good size to play games and still keep the laptop to a more mobile and light weight. Boots is about 5 sec from power off. Love the keypad / mouse pad on the right side. I always have problem when they are between the keyboard and myself.

8 September 2017

Very solid laptop in terms of build quality and design. It performs pretty well as far a I could test it. However, battery life is horrible, I hardly get more than a hour by doing non graphic intensive tasks.

1 September 2017

Anyways it's still the best gaming laptop at 15'6

Battery work for 4hrs? No it's only about 2hrs for just downloading

19 September 2017

I bought this laptop only a few days ago, but so far it is amazing. I find the build quality is very high -- no defects, the chassis is solid, almost no flex in the body or screen. My only criticism on this count is the plastic lower panel that opens up to provide ventilation, which is not rigid.

14 September 2017

Just to start, I have owned a gaming laptop prior to this which was the full force 1080 and I have owned three gaming desktops too, one with a fully liquid cooled 1080 in. My advice would be to simply google this rig and watch and read every review you come across to get to terms with the pros and...

terrible, the screen was black since I got it, the problem was never solved

6 September 2017

I've only had it for like 5 minutes but if this laptop is not quality, I don't know what is. Without a doubt the nicest keyboard I've ever owned. The keys feel extremely high quality. I love the trackpad being on the right hand side.

5 September 2017

This laptop is insane. Takes a little to get used to the keyboard and if you use the track pad. I love traveling with it too. PERFECT! I don't find it being noisy or having heat issues.

3 September 2017

I like it so far but if I were you I would buy an Aorus laptop instead the way the asus is designed seems good but it gets hot and the keyboard place is very unconventional as well goes for the track pad sure it has a 120 Hz G-Sync which in games looks amazing but I played with 60 Hz and it looked...
