Mainstream update. The affordable ROG GL series gets Skylake, DDR4, USB Type-C, and other small changes to bring it up to speed. We check out the updated model and its performance gains with an overclocked GPU from Xotic PC.
high quality matte IPS display; accurate grayscale and colors, factory overclocked GPU; excellent gaming performance, good Turbo Boost performance under stress, 2x storage bays (M.2 + 2.5-inch SATA III), accessible storage bays and RAM slots, bright backlight; great contrast, USB 3.1 Type-C Gen.
most internal components not easily accessible, high power consumption; short battery life, no native Thunderbolt 3 support, moderate backlight bleeding, case is a fingerprint magnet, system fan is never idle, no NVMe support, thick and heavy, weak speakers
The Asus GL552VW performs well and runs cool and quiet in pretty much every situation. The IPS screen on this top end configuration is also a pleasure to look at. On the other hand, the design and especially the build-quality are a step backwards when compared to the the older G-series 15-inchers,...
great display; solid performance; easy to upgrade; runs cool and quiet; the battery is not encased; fair price
chunky and heavy body; very weak screen frame on the plastic covered version - get the metallic unit instead; mushy keyboard and not the best trackpad; rather small battery
We've come full circle, and what was the question? Ah, yes, can one of industry's most recognisable brands nail the gaming laptop? The answer is almost, but not quite. At £875, the Asus Republic of Gamers GL552VW promises plenty but falls short in one or two key areas.
Looks like a proper gaming laptop, Quad-core Intel Skylake CPU, Solid 1080p gaming credentials, Good connectivity options, Removeable battery
Disappointing TN display, Single-channel memory, SSD is basic by today's standards
I was very happy with my older Asus laptop so wanted to stick with Asus. Big mistake! I already had to return one of their higher-end 4k UHD models recently due to defects. This model had all the specs I need for my editing work and I was excited to get it.
Overall, it is a powerful beast without any driver issues like early 2016. Now is the best time to buy it, simply uninstall Geforce Experience and reinstall it, and remove GameFirst III (if it hasn't been patched yes, which is surely the case since all other problems seems solved).
Before buying this laptop (my first), I literally read hundreds of reviews switching from "Best machine ever" to "so much problems". All the problems seemed to be related to driver issues (which can be solved) so I gave it a try. Here is my feedback after a week.
-Yes it will get all your fingerprints (but the box comes with a little tissue to wipe them off easily) -Yes the speakers are not the best. BUT using the ASUS software and not only using presets (which sucks!) and customing your own curves can give a pretty decent sound.
- The product turns off inexplicably, this has happened about 3 times within two weeks. I hope to be operating system problem. - Sometimes when I disconnect - the input of headphones the sound is not played on the speakers (OS problem).
The first computer came in with a broken screen. I sent this back for a replacement and reprieved it with a broken left speaker. I'm without a computer now and frustrated. I don't trust to buy a THIRD one!
