There are many reasons to have a really good set of monitoring headphones in the studio - we may need to work quietly because of noise constraints or perhaps we don't want to listen to the same set of speakers all day.

The AKG K712 Pro has been around for more than two years, and in that time it has solidified its position within the headphone world as a competitive headphone with a competitive price. But at $399, how does this open back headphone compare to similar models from other manufacturers?
Allow me to preface this review with some background information. I have experience listening to different present-day AKGs, including the Q701 Quincy Jones Signature, the K702 65th Anniversary Edition (Austrian-made), the K7XX Massdrop First Edition, the K240 Studio, and the K612 Pro.

- excellent neutrality, excellent soundstage and imaging, neutral and detailed bass, well-balanced treble and mids, comfortable, highly musical for a K7

- headstrap elastics weaken over time, needs high quality power to extract the bass impact, can sound harsh on the wrong system
I needed something accurate to check mixes and edits. I had been using the K701 cans which I like better because they are *NOT* accurate - they're I guess what's called an "audiophile" headphone. The K712s are accurate.
If you are looking for the ultimate perfection of sound look no further! This pair of headphones does the job, and can deliver astounding quality! They are compatible with iPods, and other gadgets.
Been using AKG K712 phones for a week now. Amazingly true sound, BEST EVER. But I get headaches in under an hour of mixing at low level. The fit is too tight on my head, which measures 148mm between the bones just behind the center-point above my ears: a normal size, I am told.
