Good points: Outstanding performance across the frame of a high-resolution full-frame sensor even wide open; excellent build quality. Bad points: Extremely high price; no auto-focus; large and heavy; light fall-off at apertures larger than f2.8; not weather-sealed at the lens mount.

Designed with the highest performance in mind, the Otus range is expensive, bulky and heavy. But, billed as “The best standard lens in the world” on the Zeiss website, let's see how this 55mm f/1.4 stands up to this brave and unequivocal claim, and especially if the price tag can be justified for a...

This lens is a beast. A beast not only in price and weight, but also in performance and build quality. As you would expect with a $4,000 lens, the Zeiss 55mm ƒ/1.4 Otus displays fantastic results.

As you see the Zeiss Otus 1.4/55 had just one single flaw, the huge vignetting. On the one hand I don’t know any 1.4/50 class lens which wouldn’t feature a high vignetting level on full frame; on the other hand the physical dimensions of the Otus suggested that it would dominate in that category.

This is my third Zeiss, second Otus, for my Nikon D810A. The 85/1.4 arrives tomorrow. I recently took this lens, the 28/1.4, the Milvus 15, and several Nikon and Sigma lenses, p.us an additional D810 body and tripods to the Maldives. Schlepping that much weight was not trivial, but easily worth it.

Just got the Otus 55.Optical quality is excellent.Sharpness is so much better than my L glass.Contrast and color is superb.A little expensive though but mates very well with my Canon 5DsR.Took a few shots of a group of 6 at f3.2 and all are exceptionally sharp -even a little off the plane of...

I have had the lens for three weeks now, used it on my Canon 5DIV, and SonyA7RIII with MetaboneIV, this sure is a real thang. Have the Otus85 for the past three years, so naturally G.A.S. thing was at work and prevailed again.

I have the otus 85 and now the otus 55. I agree with the other reviews. It is not a lens for tourists. This is a serious lens that requires thinking and preparing for the shot. If you invest the effort to get a great photo, this lens will not disappoint you.

As a two-system user for many years (currently Leica M9 and Nikon D810), I was used to using each system for what it did best. Nikon excelled when I needed AF, telephoto, zoom, or macro, Leica when those did not apply and I just wanted the best possible (i.e., most realistic) image quality.

The best lens available. The photos are crisp and extremely clear. AF is absent but absolutely not a problem. Definite one to have in your bag.

This lens is amazing. After shooting it for a week the photos from other pro Nikon lenses look simply not as great. The quality and details are stunning. Yes, it's big, it's heavy, it's manual and quite expensive, but the picture quality and look is worth this spend.

First off, this lens is completely impractical for me, and most people. Nikon viewfinders are not good for MF and live view is excruciating. Plus the lens is extremely large and heavy. And, while reasonably priced for what it is, it's expensive compared to other dslr primes.

I own already Zeiss zf 25/2, 35/2 and 100/2 and they are my most used lenses on the Nikon 800. I was pleasantly surprised that the Otus 55/1.4 is in many respects even better than my other Zeiss lenses.

The Otus 55 is without a doubt one of the most flawless lenses created. However, you have to know that that is what you're looking for in an image. So much work, these days, is leaning toward a distressed/vintage look. The Otus line of glass is NOT that!
