Ive used these drives for many years starting back when they were just a couple TB and connected via firewire (imac). Probably have like 6-7 of them total purchased over the course of years (latest is an 8 TB version running raid 1, mirrored).
Can’t speak to reliability yet, but setup was easy. I’m using a standard raid setup to archive photos to make space on my laptop. Perfect for that. It’s big, and needs power, but it’s more for occasional use to acces older files, so that’s fine. Build quality is good, and it’s quiet.
I'm using this as a backup to my NAS. Smoothest installation I've ever experienced. It's been 2 weeks & it's working great so far.
I had to have my first drive replaced by WD within about 3 months of buying it due to a drive failure. I got the replacement and within days had the same issue. I struggled to believe it, so I spent some time researching and found that the WD software is suspect.
You gotta RAID it through the WD Ultilities app. It took me a minute to figure that out but it has worked fine ever since. I have no problem editing 4K UHD video footage off of it.
Comes up with error messages each time iMac goes into hibernation. Have a second WD drive that does same thing. WD tech support says drive failures. Actually believe it is a software issue. WD needs to provide support from US group for more accurate commutations.
Make sure to change the config to RAID 1 mirror. You'll loose 4TB but it's worth it to save your data. A drive already failed after only 2 months.
The storage capacity is great, even in mirrored mode. I did have some issue setting it up. Tech support took forever to answer my call, but they eventually helped me out. I’ve had it for a few months now and everything seems to be working properly.
Having purchased several My Book Duo drives in the past, I was surprised that the sleek case design had been changed to this clunky retro monolith that's as noisy as it is ugly. I have done everything I can think of to quiet the vibration noise that is constantly assaulting me, but nothing works.
I've always liked Western Digital drives, and this one is no exception. It's very quick and easy to set up, and I was using it inside of 5 minutes. It comes as RAID 0 out of the box, but I prefer to use these drives either as mirrored or as JBOD. They are a very quiet pair of drives.
