To see how much data throughput I was able to pull from a WiFi connection to the Western Digital My Passport Wireless Pro 2TB, I used a 2015 13" Apple MacBook Pro equipped with a Broadcom 802.11ac wireless adapter. This MacBook Pro is considered one of the best laptops in the market at press time.

The last time we reviewed a wireless external hard disk drive from Western Digital – the My Passport Wireless – we came out rather unimpressed by the device. This time around, the My Passport Wireless Pro , a souped-up version of the aforementioned wireless drive, landed on our desk for evaluation –...

We had only two real complaints about WD’s original My Passport Wireless media-streaming Wi-Fi hard drive: short-ish battery life, and an inability to charge other devices. WD has remedied both shortcomings with the all-new My Passport Wireless Pro.

WD's My Passport Wireless Pro is one of the most feature rich storage devices I have seen in a very long time, but it certainly comes at a price.

That's especially true considering how inexpensive flash media has become these days. Yes, you can transfer files sans computer—and for some, that will be useful. But what good is a file transfer if it takes too long, or you can’t easily view and confirm that everything successfully transferred?

  • +

Integrated SD 3.0 card slot, Available in 2TB or 3TB capacities, Good battery life for a wireless hard drive

  • -

Glitchy experiences, even after a WD firmware update, Bulky, non-traditional size, Bumpy software implementation

I own the 1st release of this excellent product and it is still fully operation. The 2nd release, this product, is just one step up the ladder of excellency from Western Digital. I would highly recommend WD My Passport Wireless Pro to anyone wanting digital camera memory storage / backup while on...

Best travel device I have ever purchased. This is the perfect companion for my trips. Load movies to watch on plane, backs up images from my camera via SD Card reader, backs up images from iPhone/iPad while away.

I saw the negative reviews and thought they may have gotten a faulty unit, but it is literally the worst drive I have ever used. It keeps disconnecting, I can't use my current file naming system, and it's very slow. Not for the professional, or for anyone's use for that matter!

It works as advertised, however I just need to adjust my expectations. Without getting into tech details, here is the summary of my experience after using it for a about a year:1. It is capable of holding up large video files (I did up to 4GB each);2.

Purchased to backup a Windows 7 32 bit desktop computer before doing a fresh install of Windows 10 64 bit. Bought this unit as opposed to others because of the USB 3.0 port, the ability of it to act as a DLNA media server as well.
