one of the best lenses for sharpness for the price that I would consider comparable to Zeiss which i also use. I recommend this lens for any serious photographer.
it's light and ok, but it doesn't have the background blur that my leica 50/2 summicron has, and it's not holographic sharp like my canon L lenses. it's extremely well made, and easy to focus, and if i had to use it in the rough, it'd be perfect -- light and narrow and good enough for photo...
I used to shoot with 50mm lenses (full frame sensor) for the past six years, and decided to try wider angle. I know, some might say that the difference between 50 and 40 is minimal, but for me it's substantial.
Looking for a good normal lens for an APS-C and having tried a few other candidates, I thought that I should try this manual focus lens. I figured that for this price and with the exclusion of auto-focus, I get a high quality lens.
I am cautiously giving this a 5 star review...I teeter on a 4-5 star, however the uniqueness of this lens and build quality push it to a 5 for me. I am NOT a pixel peeper. I prefer to look at an overall rendering of an image to judge a lens, as well as looking at how the lens is being used.
Having heard a lot of good things about this lens I decided to order one as I am looking for the perfect small, reasonably priced 'normal' lens. With a focal length of 40mm, this was also a good selling point as it differentiates it from all the 50mm lenses out there.
Awesome characterful lens
The big selling point of this lens for me is how small and light it is, which is great for hiking and backpacking. Image quality is excellent too with real depth and dimensionality, and colour fringing is almost non-existent.
Compared to my L series zoom lenses, this lens is amazing. It is worlds ahead in terms of sharpness, image quality, build quality, size, and weight. Until you have tried a lens like this, with an appropriate focusing screen, you haven't really tried manual focus: not only is it nothing to worry...
This lens gives me Communication Err 01 randomly on my EOS 550D. IQ is good, but user experience is totally ruined because it keeps giving me this error. All my other lenses are working fine, so its not a problem with the Camera body.
