After Tamron’s ambitious 10-24mm wideangle zoom produced inconsistent MTF results in a previous WDC test, we decided a re-test was in order to see whether our test lens was a one-off.

  • +

Extended zoom range, low price-point, minimal colour fringing

  • -

    Performance at 24mm

The SP AF 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II LD Aspherical (IF) is Tamron's second attempt at a wide angle zoom for DX cameras, and it certainly looks as though this time the company has come up with a more compelling product than its older 11-18mm.

  • +

Equal widest angle in its class, and largest zoom range (by a whisker), Low distortion, Generally good resistance to flare

  • -

Soft wide open (low local contrast), Soft corners at all focal lengths and apertures, Wide diameter lens hood takes up lots of space in a bag

The biggest advantage the Tamron 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II Lens has over the other ultra-wide angle lenses is its price. The 10-24's USA price varies based on the amount of the rebate that, at review time, is typically available for it - but a $50-$100 price advantage over the next-most inexpensive...

Tamron introduced the first super, super zoom, so it was no surprise that they would stretch the limits of the ultra wide-angle zoom, not only that but they've now introduced their second version.

  • +

Lighter weight, Wide zoom range, Price

  • -

Noisy zoom (possibly just our review model), Small amount of chromatic aberration at the extremes of the frame, Slightly soft when shooting into the sun.

The SP AF10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II is Tamron's second ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for cameras with APS-C sized sensors. Replacing an 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 lens, it provides a wider zoom range, particularly at longer focal lengths.

Gary Wolstenholme casts his discerning eye over the Tamron 10-24mm Aspherical Macro. This ultra-wide angle offering from Tamron cost £385, which is keenly priced when compared to the manufacturer's own offerings. Both Sigma and Tokina offer lenses in this range.

An ultra-wide angle zoom designed for digital SLRs with an APS-C size sensor, which covers a range that is perfectly suited for landscape photography.

On one hand we have no doubts that the new Tamron is better than its predecessor. It’s better in terms of focal lengths’ range, aperture and optical characteristics. We also have no doubt that it can easily enter the lists with the previous generation of ultra wide-angle lenses, so lenses like Canon...

The Tamron AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 SP Di II LD Aspherical IF left us unimpressed regarding its performance. There's a significant amount of barrel distortion at all focal lengths, CAs are rather high at the shortest focal length, as is vignetting.

I started doing real estate photography. The outfit I work with requires that I be able to shoot with a 10mm focal length. Based on the available products and features, the choice came down to two, Nikkor or Tamron. I chose the Tamron mostly for price as the Nikkor was significantly more expensive.

Useful focal range, but needs a lot of work to produce decent quality images, and even then they are not great. Useless at 10mm.

  • +

Extreme wide-angle, fast auto focus, reasonably light

  • -

Very soft under 12-13mm, chromatic aberration

This is a significant improvement over a 17 mm and it is clear, even at the edges. It is smooth and easy to use, reasonably fast.

  • +

Compact Design, Easy To Use, Improves Picture Quality

I enjoy using this lens. The perspective is fantastic. The distortion at 10mm is hardly noticeable unless you are in close. The usual assumption is that lens of this type is best for landscapes, but this lens is also excellent for those close in shots also.

  • +

Good Optical quality and value for this price range, Excellent and useful zoom range, A lot of fun to use indoors or up close, Good build quality, Lens flare and CA are well controlled in most lighting

  • -

Autofocus is a bit slow, Lens Hood is very large, Huge Filter Diameter, Built in Flash is not useable with this lens unless you can deal with the large shadow at the bottom of the frame.

Tested and used with my Pentax K-5, the quality picture is very good at 10-14mm in f/5.6 or f/8 (without vignetting or visible distortion). The autofocus is a little bit noisy. Very happy by this lens and its price range. I recommend it.
