I have a Dell PowerEdge 6800 running openSUSE Leap 42.1 and acting as a Xen server. I also have a APC UPS 2200, a huge beast of a UPS. However, the UPS's USB port is busted. I tried using the built in serial port for my server, but it is slaved to Xen as a console port.

Having purchased a new computer, I needed a serial communications card for use in my Amateur radio activities. After much research into the cards available, this card meets the criteria I was looking for. My old computer had a similar card and it functioned perfectly.
startech and serial port cards always work good for me, I use them in older technology serial signature capture devices.

works just fine, used for serial signature capture device

nothing negative to say today
It is getting hard to find a mobo with onboard serial, and sometimes you just need a COM1 or COM2 for interface purposes. This answers the mail, and works with everything from Win7 to Win Server 2012R2 and everything in between ...
What can I say, StarTech never dissapoints. I always look to them for odd hardware like this that works in Linux. Had trouble locating the source code for the MosChip on this card to compile the kernel module. Decided just to look on StarTech's website vs.

All four ports have header connections. Includes low profile brackets. Kernel module source code available on StarTech's website.

I needed a 9 pin (RS232)serial connector, I installed this card. Installed the drivers no problems. Checked what com port it was on. Putty loves it.
The driver disk autorun errors on execute. There is no setup utility, and no instructions on driver installation. Drivers from website fail to load properly. You need to manually install drivers from CD, then let Windows Update retrieve functional drivers.

Expensive. Documentation could be better.
I bought the board to add to my home-brew computer I use for controlling my amateur radio station as I needed more serial ports. It installed easily with no fuss or bother and I recently added a Linux distro to the computer and it was recognized as well with Ubuntu Linux.
The card uses the OXPCIe954 chipset, which appears to be supported automatically under the current version of Ubuntu. The 2-port and 8-port variants are also supported. Other manufacturers' chipsets may not enjoy such automatic kernel support, as I've discovered.

Works perfectly in Linux. Running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) 64-bit, kernel 2.6.28. I just put the card in, booted the machine, the kernel detected the card automatically during boot, and ttyS0-3 are now in my /dev directory. Minicom and a loopback adapter verify that each port works fine.

D-sub retention screw doesn't quite line up with connector, but can be made to fit without much difficulty.
Been having trouble with pc dropping USB to dual RS232 adapter. So far working perfect. Monitoring 2 solar system inverters for logging output. Needs to record without intervention.
