In the past week, Sony announced one of it’s latest releases, the HDR-AS50 Action Cam. They’ve listened to the suggestions and complaints from consumers to create a top of the line, user-friendly, feature-rich action camera that’s built for capturing quality footage on your most exciting adventures.
Sony’s Action Cam range is pretty diverse, ranging from the entry-level AS20 all the way up to the 4K-capable X1000V. The HDR-AS50 sits just above the former, but it’s still firmly at the cheaper end of the line-up.

Long battery life, Decent companion app, Removable battery, Solid construction, Still image quality is good

Mediocre video quality, Only one adhesive mount included, Heavy in its waterproof case, So-so low-light performance
The Sony HDR-AS50 is an affordable way to jump on the action camera bandwagon – as long as you're happy with high definition video, as opposed to 4K footage, and stills quality that reflects the fact that it’s been shot on something a quarter of the size of the average smartphone handset, complete...
UX This is my third action cam, I previously owned a GoPro hero and a SJCAM SJ4000. Both of them have the same problems to me, the buttons are hard to push, I can't tell whether they are turned on or not, and the setup menu is hard to navigate.
Love the ease of use and access to the new menu system. Steadyshot is great. Tripod mount very user friendly. HD video XAVC quality vivid mode.
ThisSony HDRAS50 is not quite as good ad the Sony HDR-AS200. As far as I'm concerned this is more of an entry level action cam than the Sony HDR-AS200 yet it costs the same. If I were to do it again I would get the HDR-AS200. This one doesn't have GPS built in.
Having previously owned the AS10 and AS100 action cams from Sony, I was very happy to see that this model fixed all of the little issues I had with them. The physical size is similar to the AS100 and the video quality is also comparable (ie very good).
Bought this camera to do some timelaspe and outdoor recording. Work really well for both. The size is great and the waterproof case is solid and doesn't add to much bulk. The sound is not very good when in the case but I guess that is to be expected.
The housing that comes with the camera (HDR-AS50) enables taking videos up to 60 meters, enough for any sport diver, the wide angle lens allows capture of the underwater world, in particular big fish without the need to worry about getting closer.
if you want a small action camera, I would suggest a go pro
overall, very nice product. However, when you cover the camera with the plastic cover, you get no audio!
Picture quality is and battery life is good. shame that it's not waterproof. When it is in the w/p casing the sound recorded is inaudible.
I should have bought this Sony action camera from the beginning to take videos of my motorcycle rides. But wasting my time and money on four different makes, I am so glad to have bought the Sony.
