There has been a lot of hype about the Sony RX100's DSLR-like capabilities packed into a compact body, but does the user experience and image quality live up to all the talk?

The Sony RX100 packs a lot of image quality punch into a truly shirt pocket portable compact digital camera. Shutter lag and autofocus performance are quite good, still image quality is on the high end of the pecking order for true compact digitals and the ability to operate in fully automatic mode...

  • +

Excellent still image quality, Good autofocus and shutter lag performance, Good ISO performance given resolution, Full manual controls along with fully automatic and RAW shooting format

  • -

Cost, No external battery charger, Below average printed user's manual, RAW converter must be downloaded

The RX100 is probably the most capable compact camera on the market today, combining the image quality benefits of a mid-sized sensor with the proportions of a conventional compact. Extensive, though not flawless, manual controls make the RX100 a great second camera for DSLR shooters.

  • +

Excellent image quality and solid ISO performance, Class-leading movie features and quality, A good degree of customization puts your favorite settings at your fingertips, Fast operation, including focus and Raw capture, Flexible lens range (though a brighter zoom would have been nice), Excellent...

  • -

Clickless control dial contributes to vague and unengaging shooting experience, Flash metering is unpredictable, Lack of ND filter can limit the ability to use wide apertures, Screen hard to see in direct sunshine, despite WhiteMagic technology, No official option to fit filters onto the lens...

We did not find cons when we took the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 for a ride. The device is the best combo of an interchangeable-lens cam and a point-and-shoot product. It will make you fall in love with it on the spot.

The Sony DSC-RX100 is a very modern and beautiful compact camera with an aggressive design and elegant and characterized by the use of high-quality materials. The performance and features are anything but compact and help to make the price of this device quite high, reaching figures that can be...

Sony's Cyber-shot RX100 takes the cake as the most premium of pocket cameras, with a much larger sensor, a very bright lens (at wide angle), excellent image quality, great performance, and enough modes and special features to keep a tinkerer busy for a good long time.

  • +

Excellent high-ISO performance for such a compact model; Smart controls; Small body; Bright lens; 10fps full-res burst mode; Very fast shutter response; Excellent LCD., Smart controls in a compact body, Excellent implementation of Program Shift with front ring, Exposure preview as you make...

Sony took a hard look at the high-end enthusiast/prosumer segment of the point-and-shoot market and decided, quite rightly, that something was missing, namely a sophisticated connoisseur’s camera with a large high-res sensor and a fast lens that’s compact and lightweight enough to slide into a...

The RX100 has just been released and it goes for $649 – much less than the $2800 asking price for the RX1. The Sony RX100 is therefore a great choice for professionals and enthusiasts who want a high quality travel camera with no compromise on the photos, as well as beginners who want to have just...

Given the sensor size the the solid performance of the RX100, I can’t see a better point and shoot camera on the market right now. The RX100 is fast and produces extremely solid images for a camera that easily fits in your pocket.

The only downside to this camera, which for some isn't a downside at all, is that it offers far more options than I would ever use. However, I bought it for its compact size and large sensor, and it has delivered many, many terrific images for me.

My other cameras are a Pentax K50 for rain and an A6000 Sony for higher speed and features. This is the best carry around camera you can get for the $400-$500 price. Version 2-5 are great but you are talking up to $1000 for version V.

Great picture quality. Auto focusing is a bit tougher than an DSLR especially close up. Picture quality is better than phone and a little short of DSLR....but it isn't much bigger than the phone so I can live with that. All modes are excellent - fireworks was great!

  • +

90% of DSLR in a very small size. Totally worth it.

  • -

Slippery to hold - fix it by buying a camera jacket case.

This camera has an extraordinary lens not found in a camera you can carry with you when space is limited. It has tremendous features and takes great pics in low light. This is the 2nd one I bought as the 1st was blown over on a tripod in Death Valley

I noticed some of the small pocketable cameras could take very good photos comparable to those taken with semi decent digital SLR camera. Especially the ones taken during bright daylights turn out very impressive photos.

  • +

Great photos in a small package.

  • -

Too much blue tint if white balance is not chosen correctly.

I bought the RX100 I a while back and have taken it around the world as my main camera (the Canon EOS 7D and all of its wonderful companion glass either sitting in the cabin/hotel room or left at home). I looked at the upgrades contained in RX100 II and III and passed them by.

the new stacked imager yields exceptional photos. Coupled with Sony's intelligent scene management, truly striking images are obtained without having to 'optimize' them after transfer to the laptop. The super-high-frame-rate video is spectacular but alas I have not used it much.

  • -

A slight 'con' is the limited zoom range of the camera lens (70 mm equivalent maximum). However, the image detail obtained is so spectacular it allows cropping and expanding the image with minimal degradation/pixelation. So functionally the lens zooms to about 110 mm, maybe 180 mm via the crop.

I thoroughly recommend the RX100 as a pocketable stand-in for a professional DSLR for situations where you can't use the DSLR (not practical/socially acceptable/safe to carry a big camera) For someone just starting up, who doesn't have a DSLR - there are lots of good entry-level DSLR's which are...

  • +

The RX100 is genuinely pocketable. It stays in my day bag all the time, except when I put it in the pocket of my trousers., The image quality is excellent, at least as good as my Nikon D300.

  • -

I do not like LCD viewfinders. I accept them only as the price to pay to make a camera so small. The RX100 has the usual problems:, 1. The image is too small to see what you are doing. If I'm taking a group, I can't judge the best moment to do the picture because I can't see their expressions, 2.
