The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX90V has an incredible zoom range and an excellent EVF, but its images suffer when the light gets low.

  • +

Sharp, 30x zoom lens. Quick focus. Compact design. Excellent pop-up EVF. Solid control layout. Sharp, tilting rear LCD. 10fps burst capture. GPS. Wi-Fi.

  • -

Images suffer at high ISO. No Raw support. Long delay after burst shooting. Lacks continuous autofocus setting for still images. Pricey.

The Sony CyberShot HX90V is an incredibly versatile and compact digicam. A powerful processor and Zeiss 30x optical zoom lens are great compliments to the 18-Megapixel CMOS imaging sensor. Its versatility and great collection of features make it an awesome travel companion.

  • +

iAuto and Program shooting modes are accurate and easy in all situations, Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record, 30x optical zoom lens is great for all shooting situations, near and far, Great overall image quality, 5-axis image stabilization goes a long way to help steady your...

  • -

Some noise in all sample images, common with an 18-Megapixel sensor of this size, Lower Resolution EVF doesn't give you the realistic feel that many of Sony's other EVFs do, Higher ISO images show very high levels of noise, Burst shooting stops at 10 images, Performance was a little slower than...

On the whole the overhaul of the HX60V that has taken place to get to the HX90V has been successful. There have been certain omissions made, most noticeably the loss of the hotshoe and exposure compensation dial, however the target user of the HX90V will no doubt happily dispense with those two...

  • +

Large zoom range is welcome; Full suite of connectivity options; Pleasingly compact design

  • -

Lack of raw capture; Lack of touchscreen functionality

Sony's Cyber-shot HX90V is one of the smallest compacts with a 30x optical zoom. Successor to the popular HX60 and HX50, it shares a similar optical zoom range, but packed into a smaller body.

Although not a great performer in low-light conditions, the super-compact Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX90 offers fair image quality in a lightweight package that makes it the ideal travelling companion.

  • +

    Compact, high-quality frame, Super-versatile lens

  • -

Limited dynamic range at higher ISO, No RAW support, Noisy, low-detail images at higher ISO

On paper this looks like a great travel zoom camera and it feels very nice in the hand. The viewfinder is a real bonus when shooting in bright light. The HX90V is a solidly performing all round travel compact camera that offers a lot but doesn't deliver in every single area.

We liked last year's HX60V, but with slightly underwhelming image quality and no EVF or lens barrel control ring like the competition from Panasonic, it couldn't quite compete. Sony has clearly listened though and the Cyber-shot DSC-HX90V addresses most of our concerns.

Sony already dominates much of the compact digital camera market here in the UK, but the company is looking to cement that position with two (technically three) new travel compacts; the HX90 and HX90V, and the WX500.

The Sony Cyber-shot HX90V is one of the most compact 30x optical zoom lens cameras available and even packs in an electronic viewfinder making it great for use on bright sunny days.

  • +

Good exposure and colour, Extremely compact camera, 30x optical zoom lens, Built in electronic viewfinder (EVF), Excellent optical image stabilisation system, Tilting 3inch screen, Fast continuous shooting, Good battery life, Electronic level

  • -

Noise visible in images taken at ISO80, More expensive than the competitors, Some corner softness

With the rise in popularity of smartphones, sales of compact cameras have steadily declined. However, there are a few compact camera ranges, such as tough cameras and travel zooms, that still thrive, as they provide something that smartphones cannot.

  • +

+ Excellent, compact design, + Extensive zoom range makes it very versatile, + Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity

  • -

No touchscreen on the LCD screen, No exposure-compensation dial, No raw recording

Great camera for the price, but with limitations. The long zoom needs support when extended, and the lens & captor combination need light to return nice photos.Powerful set (sets?) of image processing/adjustment features, even though one needs to have the Help guide printed to be able to understand...

For a small sensor, compact superzoom I have to give it 5 stars. The viewfinder is handy in tricky lighting and then most of the time is out of the say. The images stay sharp enough at zoom to be satisfactory (not great but satisfactory which is pretty good for a small sensor in a small camera) and...

  • +

Sharp images at widest apertures. EVF, tilt screen, focus peaking for manual focus. Fits in your pocket.

  • -

    Not weather sealed. Pricy.

The world's smallest ultrazoom camera. Compact but versatile with a x30 zoom and GPS—excellent for hikers and backpackers.

  • +

x30 zoom lens, Electronic viewfinder, Tilting screen, Inbuilt GPS receiver, Compactness

  • -

Image quality good, but could be better, Pop-up viewfinder and flash are fiddly to use, Video lacks time-lapse mode

The features built into this camera are amazing. It's hard to believe there are so many options available in such a tiny package. I only received it last week and have just scratched the surface of all the capabilities. So far, just using the "intelligent" setting the photos look great.

I've been using this camera for about 1 week now and here is my thoughts. PROS - cheap and affordable camera for vloggers. 1. (I don't need a RAW) As a simple vlogger, personally, I feel I don't need a RAW and editing a picture.

The Zeiss lens gives superb quality images. The intelligent auto setting is very useful. The camera fails to focus if the light is too poor and prompts one to use the flash.
