The Sony HX400 boasts a 50x zoom and a 10 fps burst speed--but can the long zoom camera live up to big expectations?

Expertreviews co uk.33706088

The FZ200's more modest 12-megapixel resolution keeps its noise levels lower, and its constant f/2.8 aperture means it captures significantly more light in telephoto shots. The HX400V's maximum (equivalent) focal length is twice as long at 1200mm, but we'd much rather have the FZ200's cleaner images...

Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-HX400 is the successor to the HX300, and with a very impressive 50x optical zoom that has a 35mm focal-length equivalent of 24-1200mm it is a true ‘super-zoom’. However, while the HX400 supersedes the HX300, the new model has relatively few improvements over its predecessor.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX400V is a rather modest update of last year's HX300 model, principally adding a faster Bionz X processor, useful multi interface shoe, and Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity and built-in GPS.

There are a lot of interesting functions that make the HX400V appealing, including the 50x optical zoom, built-in Wi-Fi and creative functions.

The Sony Cybershot DSC-HX400V is one of the more expensive 50x optical cameras available, but the extra money means better image quality. The camera body also has a higher level of quality, with the EVF automatically switching on when you put your eye to it being a nice touch.

  • +

50x optical zoom, Has Wi-Fi and GPS, EVF which automatically switches on, Rotating screen, Good battery life, Very good panoramas

Image quality is poor at ISO 6400 and 12800, Most expensive 50x zoom camera we have tested, No RAW shooting

I have been using cameras for over 60 years. My equipment range from top end SLRs to compact point and shoot. I own lenses from 10mm to 600mm. I have been shooting with this camera exclusively for the past 2 weeks. I am amazed by the quality of my photos.

I bought this camera as a backup, but it does everything I need and more. An awesome camera.I would not ask for anything more at this price. It's a steal.

Ease of use. Light weight, Great zooming capability.

  • -

Nothing I can think of. It will be even better if the camera can save images in RAW format.

My fault, as I did not research this item with other merchants before purchasing. Older model, that is too overpriced for what you are getting.

I had a difficulty, my fault. Couldn't find a piece. I was fortunate to get Ray again and he helped me find the missing piece. All is better than well. They help and are quite interested and involved in what they sell. Real people, great deals!

My Mom, now deceased, was an award winning nature photographer. She taught me much. Times change and I needed something that had the long lens capabilities without the old tripods, slides, darkroom, elegant yet rare approach.

I love this camera! I enjoyed its predecessor, the HX300, so this one is certainly an upgrade for me.

I bought this camera in August of 2014. I took it on my yearly bear hunt and fell in love with the amazing zoom and the multiple features. I confess I am very much the newbie, so I was a bit intimidated by all the modes and functions.

I got this Camera around two weeks ago, I am just having one problem with focusing while zoomed in, but I think that is the lack of experience on my behalf. It is one of the best cameras I have owned, takes a picture when you want without that shutter lag.
