The Sony Alpha A7S can do some remarkable things. It takes very good stills with its 12.2MP full-frame sensor. Wedding and event photographers should jump on it thanks to its quick response, along with outstanding image and movie quality.

  • +

Nice extension of the A7 series, Mind-boggling ISOs, Remarkably quiet in Silent Shooting Mode, Includes two batteries

  • -

Really geared for pros, Expensive, No built-in flash, Slow burst mode

Sony rocked the photographic world when it launched the first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the a7 and a7R. This was a huge leap for the ILC genre. Will the specs have photographers rushing to buy one or will the cost outweigh the features?

  • +

excellent image quality, advanced feature set with extensive custom options, high quality electronic viewfinder, Wi-Fi

  • -

slightly sub-par kit lens vs. cameras' capabilities, movie record button awkwardly placed, autofocus somewhat sluggish in low light, relatively short battery life, limited availability of native full-frame lenses at launch

As long as you don't need fast autofocus or great burst shooting, the Sony Alpha ILCE-7R is great, compact alternative to entry-level full-frame cameras from Nikon and Canon.

  • +

Sony Alpha ILCE-7R delivers some of the best image quality we've seen for under $3,000 in a great shooting design and feature set.

  • -

Disappointing autofocus speed and battery life mar an otherwise lovely camera.

The Sony Alpha 7 is a fast-shooting, full-frame mirrorless camera that is capable of capturing some impressive images, but we prefer its sibling, the 7R, overall.

  • +

Full-frame image sensor. 5fps burst shooting. Snappy autofocus. Impressive high ISO performance. Sharp, tilting rear LCD. Focus peaking. Excellent OLED EVF. Great control layout. Compact, dust and moisture-resistant body. Vertical shooting grip available.

  • -

Sensor design includes OLPF. No PC sync socket. No built-in flash. External battery charger not included. Native lens library is in its infancy.

The Alpha 7 has broken new ground in the full-frame market, in terms of both size and price. While it's not perfect, the a7's compact size, broad feature set and very good raw image quality arguably make up for issues like relatively poor battery life and slightly overprocessed JPEGs.

  • +

Small and well-priced full-frame body, Very good image quality when shooting Raw, Solid build quality, Compatible with a huge range of legacy 35mm camera lenses with no field-of-view crop, Large, high resolution electronic viewfinder, Tilting LCD offers good detail and outdoor visibility, Useful...

JPEG quality disappointing compared to peers – crude sharpening, over-aggressive processing and occasional posterization, Autofocus can be hesitant, especially in low light; AF improves when assist lamp is turned off, Auto ISO tends to keep shutter speed at 1/60 sec, often resulting in blurry...

Consumers are often asked to either pay a premium price or sacrifice features for compact cameras. Can the $2,000 full frame mirrorless camera from Sony change that?

When we reviewed Sony's A7R mirrorless camera, we were thrilled by its combination of a full-frame image sensor and a compact body. The Sony A7 offers both, and yet it's even more affordable.

  • +

Incredibly small body for a fully-featured, full-frame camera; Very high resolution; Hybrid autofocus is reasonably fast and confident; Significantly better burst-shooting performance than A7R; Excellent image quality even at very high sensitivities; Faster x-sync than A7R; Accepts existing...

  • -

Grass-is-greener syndrome when compared to its higher-res sibling; Moderate performance; Loud shutter (but electronic first-curtain helps); Mediocre battery life when using electronic viewfinder; Weak low-light autofocus considering its price; Limited selection of native Sony FE lenses.

Comparisons are tricky for the A7, since there are no other 24MP ILCs, other than Sony’s discontinued NEX-7 and newly announced Alpha 6000, which we haven’t tested; the only other full-frame ILC is the A7R.

I was seriously considering one of these, but I am definitely having second thoughts. I have shot with high end Sony camcorders for years. The irony here is that with the large capacity batteries, Sony camcorders like the NX5 have the longest single charge run time in the industry.

I've owned the Nikon d600 & 800, Canon 5D iii and the Sony RX1 rii. They are all great cameras, but the size, quality and ease to use this A7ii paired with the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 is magic for me. LOVE IT!!!

Photographers that haven't owned a full frame sensor and are skilled in manual mode operation will feel like they are using a proper camera for the first time.

  • +

Full frame sensor / Very small body for feature set / Wireless Control & Data Connectivity / Upgradable via app store / Top quality FE lens options

Focus is slow with kit lens for sports photography / App store software needs better convenience and reliability / FE native glass is expensive

At first, I bought this camera for using some old lenses and some Leica M-Mount lenses. I appreciated immediately the possibility to customize almost every single button and gear, but what I really fall in love with was the viewfinder.

Overall a very good camera package, close to 5 stars, but camera has some quirks. Pictures can be amazing. Resolution is excellent, and will show any failure of technique. Best suited for pro photographers who understand the limitations and have a lot of good glass already which can be adapted for...

After trying some Fuji cameras for walkaround, indoor concert and vacation/city trips I decided on the A7. At a price point of €999 with 28-70 it was hard to pass on this camera. With small primes this formfactor really shines and although very small for a full frame camera the ergonomics are very...
