The mirrorless, full-frame Sony Alpha 7 II improves on its predecessor with in-body stabilization, faster autofocus, and a better ergonomic design, and earns Editors' Choice honors in the process.

  • +

5-axis in-body stabilization system. 24-megapixel full-frame image sensor. Compact design. 5fps burst shooting. Clean, detailed high ISO images. Sharp, tilting rear LCD. Focus peaking and magnification. Sharp OLED EVF. Improved ergonomics. Dust and moisture-resistant design.

  • -

Lacks PC sync socket. No built-in flash. External battery charger not included. Battery life is disappointing. Sensor design includes OLPF. Hyperactive eye sensor.

The Alpha 7 II continues to push Sony's full frame mirrorless line of cameras into ground-breaking territory. It is the only full frame mirrorless camera to offer in-body image stabilization systems and its performance is excellent.

  • +

IS is useful during still and video capture, Excellent Raw dynamic range, Good metering and white balance, Excellent resolution, Large, high-res viewfinder, Camera is comfortable to hold, Solid build quality, On-sensor PDAF, Plenty of Customizable buttons, Built in mic and headphone jack, Ability to...

  • -

Noisy high ISO images compared to full-frame competitors, Raw compression issues, Heavy for a mirrorless camera, Control dials are small, and too recessed, Subject tracking in continuous AF can be unreliable, No programmable auto ISO, No quick way to magnify AF point to 100% to check focus in Image...

We highly recommend the Sony A7 Mark II. While you can now get a great deal on the original model and get equally pleasing photos, it is worth spending that extra $400 for better video capture and the terrific five-axis stabilization system. The newer model also has better ergonomics.

  • +

Full-frame image quality in a compact body, Rock-steady five-axis stabilization, XAVC-S video format

  • -

Slow burst modes not ideal for action, No built-in flash

Sony has yet another winner on their hands with the A7 II. By addressing some of the design and ergonomic quirks of the original model, as well as providing a notable technological achievement with their 5-axis image stabilization -- and some subtle, yet worthwhile, performance enhancements -- the...

  • +

Excellent 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization; Sensor-shift IS brings stabilization to nearly any lens; Much-improved ergonomics and top-deck control layout; 'Mark II' maintains same impressive image quality, dynamic range and high ISO performance; XAVC S 50Mbps video format; Faster start-up...

(Similar to A7): Loud shutter (but electronic first-curtain helps); Battery life could be better; Low-light AF still not as good as most DSLRs; High ISO JPEGs look over-processed; Slow buffer clearing; Limited selection of native Sony FE lenses (but it's getting better).

Sony has a rather confusing naming convention for the Alpha A7 series. Not only is the Alpha name also used for its DSLRs but the A7 series also has a different lens mount compared to the previous APS-C and full-frame models.

  • +

Excellent picture quality; compact for a full-frame camera; five-axis image stabilisation works well.

  • -

Autofocus a little slow in low light; shutter sound is pretty loud.

The camera industry is the most interesting and exciting it’s been in the past 10 years. After capable smartphones decimated the point-and-shoot market, camera makers have focused their efforts on appealing to enthusiasts and professional photographers — those that need or want more than a...

  • +

Image stabilization for all lenses, Still the most compact full-frame camera you can get, Improved build quality and ergonomics

  • -

Limited and expensive lens options, Disappointing JPEG output, Autofocus still not as good as competition

Having had the opportunity to shoot with the Sony A7 II for the past three months in different conditions, I must say that I am genuinely impressed by where Sony is heading in terms of innovation.

The very first full-frame compact system camera, the Alpha A7 , was such an out-there trend setter that it nabbed the Pocket-lint Awards gong for best system camera back in 2014. Fast-forward a couple of years and, as we tread into 2016, the latest-generation A7 II is here.

  • +

Small size yet delivers big on full-frame image quality, excellent electronic viewfinder quality, tilt-angle LCD, 5-axis image stabilisation on board whatever lens you're using, affordable entry into full-frame

  • -

Poor battery life, limited FE E-mount lenses (and many of the zooms aren't up to much), autofocus system not comparable to an advanced DSLR, no pinpoint AF can see precision slip, no touchscreen

I have had this camera for about a month and a half. In that time I have shot maybe 500 photos with it with a surprising number of them keepers. My other camera is a Sony a77m2 which I have really liked from the beginning.

Dear Sony, You have put all the hard word to come up with a pretty decent camera, in terms of capabilities, however, when it comes to your software (the easiest part to perfect) you simply dropped the ball.

This is a fantastic camera with great image quality in a small package. The technology is amazing. I learned the hard way that you should not count on any weather sealing. This is my second A7ii. I lost the first to a very small amount of water that got behind the articulated screen.
