Costing around £1500 the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is one of the most expensive 85mm lenses on the market, but it’s also one of the best. On the evidence of using it on the 42-million-pixel A7R II, I see no reason why it won’t meet the demands of even higher resolution sensors that may come on the...
The Sony G Master range is described as a “supreme blend of high resolution and beautiful bokeh” and in the case of this Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM goes on to claim “outstanding sharpness dissolving to magnificent bokeh” and “the ultimate portrait lens” - clearly bold claims and definitely desirable...
The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 G Master lens is a traditionally very high quality choice. It is ideal for many more types of subject than portraits, although with the beautiful bokeh provided portraiture may well be high on the list for users of this lens.

The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is an outstanding prime lens for portraiture, offering a winning combination of sharpness and very appealing bokeh. Shooting at the maximum f/1.4 aperture does reveal a minor reduction in sharpness, but this is already resolved by f/2, and even at this aperture the lens is...
While there is still room for the Sony FE lens range to grow, particularly with affordable optics, most of the key optics required by professionals are now available. This includes the recent Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM lens.
The Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA remains a very good lens on the NEX 7. However, even the mighty Zeiss isn't perfect anymore on the 24 megapixel sensor. At max. aperture the center performance is certainly very good but the border quality is a bit lower than expected.
Are you listening Canon and Nikon? Welcome the new owner of the 85mm f/1.4 class - the Zeiss Planar T* 85mm f/1.4 ZA. We were more than impressed by the results during our previous APS-C test and the lens remains great within the full format scope as well.
People, please stop reviewing this lens on how it works with an adapter on a different system (A7r2). On my A99II this lens is nothing short of magic. Amazingly fast focus, awesome bokeh and images that I can only top with the Zeiss 135. Just buy it!
Pro:Sharp wide open. THE best bokeh.Focus lock. Aperture ring great for video.Excellent build quality. Fast focus.Con:Expensive, a bit of too heavy.Regarding the focus noise others have been complaining about:It is not loud at all but audible from close distance.
I've been wanting to add this lens to my kit for quite some time, and finally made the jump. While an outstanding portrait lens, my primary use is for outdoor shots where the 135 f1.8 is too long, the 70-200G isn't quite fast enough, and the 55 is too short.
