Too expensive
I can't help but have mixed feelings about this lens. It's built superbly, is fast focusing and has great control of falloff, distortion and flare. At shorter focal lengths it also performs very well, but to get good results at 300mm, the lens needs stopping down.

Disappointing resolution at 300mm, High price tag for such a lens
The Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM G is high quality lens and possibly the best of the breed (70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 class). The resolution figures are very good across the zoom range. Lateral CAs, vignetting and distortions are generally well controlled and not really field relevant.
Sony's 'G' lenses form much of their professional range and have price tags to match. Here we'll investigate whether this popular lens is worthy of the pro price tag.

Disappointing resolution at 300mm, High price tag for such a lens
The Sony 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 SSM G impressed during our APS-C format test and it is capable of delivering high quality results within the full format scope as well. The resolution figures are generally excellent at 70mm and still very high towards the long end although the border and corner...
This is my favorite telephoto zoom of all time. I use it on an A65. I really have NO complaints about this lens. It is sharp and has excellent contrast. AF is dead fast and reliable. Easy to manual focus as well. Very nice bokeh.
Overall, I am very happy with this lens. It produces very nice photos and fairs quite well even in direct sunlight. Its range allows for some portrait photos with very nice bokeh. The SSM makes it great for recording videos and is quick on the autofocus.
