I would not recommend this to a 'beginner' .. however a Photog on a budget would find it useful and satisfying...Cons: 1. Front lens turns while focusing, not useful for filters.2. Hunts a LOT particularly in low light.3. No 'instant tuning' .. Easy 'focus peaking' would help a lot.4.
This Sony Telephoto Lens is ideal for the beginner to novice photographer It takes nice photo's and is priced right for the photographer who is interested in a budget lens. However, when zooming out to 200mm or better, the lens tends to distort and photo's turn out grainy when zooming beyond 200mm.
Just used it at a football game during an afternoon in good light. Sharp results, mates well to my A65. No focus issues with action. A keeper!

Sharp lens, Excellent value, lightweight and relatively small in size

Slow lens, no ultrasonic motor
Extremely sharp, but very slow to focus and sometimes hunts. So it can be hit or miss with birds in flight or fast-moving objects. But when it locks on, it is as sharp as lenses costing 10x as much, and even does surprisingly sharp semi-macro.
Excellent image quality, which is the most important to me - great sharpness. I haven't experienced any frustration with the autofocus, though I can see it isn't the quickest. Overall, I'm very pleased with this lens and for the price, would heartily recommend it for the fantastic telephoto range,...
I had a Tamron telephoto but it took forever to focus sometimes and my shots were often blurry. This one focuses faster and looks sharper.
Top Quality lens, small, compact, and very lite weight. Easier to carry, than my big 170-500mm lens which takes up a lot of space. Picture quality is excellent under the most demanding conditions. Would recommend buying this lens to anyone. Great lens for the money.
Sincerely I prefer use it on manual, is not that difficult and focus what I really want it.Try to buy a 18-250 and the price escalate too much.
Excellent 55-300mm lens. I have close up and landscape photos that are great. This lens is awesome. easy to use and lite in weight.n Lightweight.
This is another lens I purchased along with a 30mm macro, and I am very happy with Sony. I been able to zoom in on those elusive Cardinals an blue jays. The image quality is superb. Most definitely recommended to any one wanting to get serious with their camera. Camera used SLT-a57. Just fantastic.
