I had this lens on my wish list for a couple of years. Since I prefer prime lenses to zooms, this one fills the gap between my 14 mm ultra wide and my 30 mm wide-normal in my Sony A-mount (APS-C) kit. The images that I have gotten with it are acceptably sharp for my needs.
The reason I purchased this lens was for landscape and architectural shoots. I purchased the lens a few days before the 4th of July. I used this lens with my a77 along with the 16-50 kit lens on my a7 for that evening, alternating shots during the fireworks display.
I was disappointed with this lens. The sharpness, clarity and contrast are nowhere near as good as the Sony 16-35mm zoom lens. The only reason to buy a prime lens is to get better image quality than you can from a zoom.
I bought a Sony A850 body and needed some lenses and this (20mm F2.8 Sony) was the first one. I have had the Nikon and Canon counterparts. This is the best of the three for sure. They all seem to have some things in common.
It's not as sharp as I expected. I'm spoiled I guess. All of my lenses are ZEISS or Minolta/Sony G series. I have two lenses that are not ZEISS or G series. The Sony 16mm distorts the way I want. This is my least favorite lens due to quality, sharpness and vignette.
This is a great lens to travel lightly with and always stays in my to go bag when heading out the door. Very sharp when stopped down a stop or two and focus speed is a non-issue. The only down side is it lacks the distance information for Sony's flash system.
I use this lens on an Alpha 850, and it's ideal for interior and exterior architecture as well as landscape. I should have purchased this lens rather than Sony's 16mm fisheye. The 16mm is fun, but the distortion only fits certain scenes and warp correction in Photoshop has its limits.
I use the lens for landscape shots, and some street shots for greater perspective/context. It focusses quickly and sharply. I am amazed by the night-time shots. Very sharp and fast focus! Watch out for an effect that I have learned is common to most super wide angle lenses.
great lens. i use it for northern lights photography and it works really well for capturing landscape.
Probably the best panoramic choice on Sony Alpha mount, I'm extremely satisfied with it's saturation and sharpness. Used Tamron 17-50 and Sony 11-17 lens, incomparable to this one.
