I'll admit I was pretty sceptical about TruePlay when I first wrote about it in September , but gosh darn it, Sonos went and made something that actually works. No, you don't need to use TruePlay, and no, it won't stand up to studio scrutiny, but it's a nice value-add for those considering a Sonos...

It sounds unbelievably good, Incredibly simple to set up, Supports a wide range of formats and music services, As loud as you like, TruePlay tuning can make a difference, Subtle styling will fit in with most décor

  • -

Sonos app UI can get cluttered if you have a lot of music sources, You're going to want a Play:1, a Play:3...

The Sonos PLAY:5 is the best wireless speaker I have ever used or heard to date…hands down walking away. The sound quality is excellent, producing a rich, full listening experience. I can only imagine what a pair of them would sound like.

  • +

Vibrant, full rich room-filling sound, Clean minimalistic look/style, Easy setup, Tailored room configuration via TruePlay, Excellent wireless range, Humidity/moisture resistant

The Play:5 is the best speaker Sonos has ever made. Its reliance on a single app for controlling all your audio services means the software experience isn't quite as slick as it could be, but it's easy to set up and sounds as good as its $499 price tag suggests.

  • +

Simple setup and tuning, Easy to turn into multi-room system with other, cheaper Sonos speakers, Audio quality is excellent, Long list of supported services, Line-in adds limitless music options

  • -

Searching for music in app is cumbersome, No dedicated remote, Priced even higher than previous generation

If we could, we'd fill our houses with stunning Sonos hardware. The only problem would be figuring out how to pay for it all. The Sonos Play 5 is a fantastic home audio system and one we rate very highly indeed.

  • +

Beautiful and well designed; good sound quality; easy to use; superb online services.

  • -

Very expensive; addictive -- you'll want one for each room; headphone output not brilliant.

Now that I’ve heard the Sonos Play:5s in my own home, I’ve come to the conclusion that the company has hit a home run with its latest speaker. The combination of approachable price, compact size, high performance, slick aesthetics, and Apple-like ease-of-use are incredibly compelling.

The best speaker Sonos has ever made, the updated PLAY:5 is the best way to get high-quality whole home audio right now.

  • +

Superb Design, great sound quality, Trueplay room correction works well

  • -

    Expensive, no optical input

The Sonos PLAY:5 is special. First of the streaming music company’s all-in-one speakers, its launch in 2009 marked a shift to the plug-and-play simplicity that Sonos is now known for, without sacrificing the sound quality that music lovers demanded.

The Play:5 is a good sounding speaker and is worth a buy for its bass performance and the Sonos ecosystem.

  • +

Best sounding Sonos speaker. Deep and rich bass performance. Trueplay software facilitates good audio quality irrespective of speaker location. Sonos software provides the ability to link all Sonos devices into a home network.

  • -

The power port and all additional ports are present at the rear of the speaker and are difficult to access if the speaker is wall-mounted. No headphone jack port. Software for the Android OS lags behind the software for the iOS version.

Mashable Choice is a badge of honor, reserved for the absolute best stuff you can see, use, or do. If it’s Choice, it’s worth your time. Sonos is well known for its Wi-Fi connected, multi-room sound systems and virtually every new speaker it introduces is a variation on its theme of room-filling,...

Easy setup, Surprisingly good sound quality, Loads, loads, and more loads of music services available, Free Sonos Controller iPhone/iPod touch app is the cat's pajamas with bees' knees printed on them

  • -

The S5 isn't quite as "all-in-one" as its name implies, since the proprietary network makes two ZonePlayers or a ZoneBridge necessary for wireless access, adding to the cost, While setup is easy, if you run into any snags they're hard to fix, Sonos wants the thing back when I'm finished reviewing it

Just added 2 play 5 to existing Sonos system of 5 play 1/One SL. Sound, depth and clarity are step above. I was happy with the Ones but am now amazed by the quality I am getting from the Play 5. Integration could not have been easier just plugged them in and added them through the app.

  • +

Amazing sound clarity and depth.Clean quality build you would expect from Sonos.

  • -

A lot people have said price but I would disagree, if you compare to speaker amplifier combo.

I am a non-technical "old guy" who lives in a condo building. Running speaker wire is impossible without it being visible, so wireless was the way to go. My research confirmed Sonos as the best wireless speakers on the market. I purchased one Play 5 and two Play 3's.

I was surprised at how heavy it was when I took it out of the box, hopefully due to having high power drivers. The setup is easy, although there aren't many troubleshooting options should things go awry. But, the sound is great!

  • +

Good sound, sleek and unobtrusive look.

  • -

Reliance on the app for troubleshooting can give you few options if things are going wrong.

I've had the Sonos Playbar and Subwoofer for over a year in the family room with the tv. They sound wonderful with the tv, music apps and local stations over the internet. I wanted to balance the first floor of the house with sound so I bought the Play5 for the living room. Perfect.

I was already a fan of the Sonos system when I added a pair these to a large room. They fill the room and sound great. Everything hooked up quickly and easily with my existing Sonos One speakers

  • +

Easy hook up. Can play media from multiple sources with app. Sound is rich and full and loud enough to upset neighbors if you want.

  • -

    None yet.

This is our 4th Play:5 we use them in our home and office. They are pricey but the sound is amazing and people are amazed when they see we can control each speaker independently from our phones. The 5 has plenty of power and a rich sound.

Great sound - easy to connect to WiFi. Was hoping it also could connect to Bluetooth compatible devices (my Peloton) - it doesn't. I needed to purchase separately a Bluetooth adapter which plugs in to the speaker and it connects to the bike (or other Bluetooth source).

  • +

Awesome sound and base, easy WiFi connection

  • -

    Not Bluetooth compatible
