The Sigma 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM is a fast normal angle lens for APS-C cameras, but suffers from a lack of sharpness and a good amount of barrel distortion.

  • +

Fast aperture. Available for many camera systems.

  • -

    Expensive. Soft images. Noticeable distortion.

Overall, there is much to recommend this lens but it isn’t in the same league as the stunning full-frame 35mm f/1.4 tested previously. Although the 30mm f/1.4 is worthy of serious consideration, potential purchasers must bear in mind that it possesses weaknesses as well as strengths.

  • +

F/1.4 maximum aperture; Excellent MTF results; Full-time MF option; Near-silent AF; Metal mounting flange

  • -

Significant barrel distortion; Some colour fringing; No image stabilisation

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM is currently the only wide angle prime that was specifically designed for APS-C sensors and as such it has no direct competition. Nevertheless, users should carefully review the benefits this lens provides versus the more traditional FF type wide angles.

A fast aperture lens always garners attention and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM Lens is no exception. Photographers wasted little time in making this lens one of their favorites.

This is a ‘standard’ lens for a cropped digital SLR. 25 years ago, all SLR’s came with a ‘standard’ lens and everybody learned how to use one. Those lenses, at 50mm, are still about but don’t have the versatility that they had on a 35mm film camera.

  • +

Fast aperture, Picture quality, Consistent performance, Fast autofocus

Originally published October 2005. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: The first high-speed "normal" lens for digital SLRs with APS-sized sensors, this 30mm f/1.4 is Sigma's first nontele lens to incorporate elements of SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass.

I bought this lense because I wanted to achieve smooth bokeh for portraits and something that would give me an edge in low light, well, aIl can say is that it performs amazingly! This is now my daily lense in place of the Canon 1.8 which doesn't even come close.

This lense was highly recommended by a photo enthusiast I met on the street taking photos...tried it for my next photo shoot and made a starkingly clear difference!

Man, got to see a useless comment about this 1.4 prime lens has "Depth of field ist pretty bad" . Please go read a book before buying any lens. you buy 1.4f (large hole) fast lens so that you can take picture of shallow depth of field!

  • +

    cheap prime lens

  • -

quality of image not as good as canon lens. but then again it's cheaper.

This is the lens I use most. It's a fast wide/mid lens. If I take only one lens with me, it's this lens. The wide aperture is really helpful for shooting sports at night and shows.

  • +

    - solid construction, - very wide aperture, - sharp

  • -

    None in my case.
