The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM doesn't quite achieve the optical perfection of the $4,000 Zeiss Otus, but it gets close at a quarter of the price.

  • +

Incredibly sharp. Minimal distortion. 15.7-inch close focus. Available for several camera systems.

  • -

Big. Depth of field scale isn't that useful. No optical stabilization. A little pricey. Dim corners at wide apertures.

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is distinctly large, heavy and expensive for its type. However this is more than made up for by its fast silent autofocus, solid build quality, and absolutely outstanding optics.

  • +

Stunning image quality - super sharp, minimal CA and practically no distortion, Impressive flare resistance, Generally attractive rendition of out-of-focus backgrounds, Fast, silent, and accurate autofocus, Excellent build quality

  • -

Large and heavy for a 50mm F1.4 prime, Relatively expensive for its class, No weather sealing

There have not been many Sigma lens announcements that generated the anticipation that the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens announcement generated. The 50 Art Lens was announced not long after the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 Distagon T* ZE Lens arrived, delivering a not-before-seen high level of...

Overall, the Sigma 50mm/1.4 is a great lens. The bokeh is soft yet complex; the clarity in details is picked up without losing blur; and the vignetting on the edges is not an issue when shooting wide open.

This is an in-depth review of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art prime lens that was announced on January 6, 2014 for Sigma SA, Canon EF, Nikon F and Sony A mounts. Ever since Sigma announced its new “Art” lens line, it has been releasing superb new lenses and updates.

Sigma has added to their 'Art' range of fast aperture lenses with this new 50mm f/1.4 lens, which will be available to fit Canon, Nikon, Sony and Sigma SLR cameras. This lens costs around £850, which seems like an awful lot for a 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Back when we originally tested the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG AF lens , the first in Sigma’s new high-end Art series to be released, we weren’t just impressed, we were eager to see what would come next.

The Sigma 50mm Æ’/1.4 Art is the most exciting lens we're likely to review this year. All competing lenses from Canon and Nikon fell short when compared to the resolving power of the 50mm Art.

Photographers looking for a fast 50mm lens that combines durability with excellent image quality will find Sigma's 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens should meet their expectations. Built to last and designed to deliver sharp, punchy photographs, it will suit both still shooters and videographers and the...

Surprisingly our full format findings don't really differ all that much compared to what we have seen already in our APS-C format review. The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM | A (Art series) remains very sharp at f/1.4, especially in the image center but even the corners are very decent.

I seldom leave reviews on products but this lens is so spectacular I couldn't WAIT to give it five stars. I was skeptical about the price after reading about other people's experiences with it as they seemed to vary BUT it was worth every penny.

My biggest disappointment is very inconsistent AF performance - same picture taken twice from the same position - one is in perfect focus, second is completely soft. Huge vignetting at f/1.4. My first and last attempt buying third party lens. Nothing compare to Canon 50 f/1.2.

    nice looking

Focusing speed is excellent in low light. I have used it for 2 weddings and I'm very happy with its overall sharpness even with the lens wide open at f/1.4. Focus accuracy is also excellent. Its a great convenience to have a lens cap size of 77mm similar to all my other lenses.

This is a gorgeous lens. The f/1.4 produces fantastic images. Would definitely recommend.

Love the lens! Incredibly sharp. Only thing I would say that beware of the fact that the lens is heavy and longer than the Canon 50mm f/1.2. Other than that, it's $400 cheaper than the Canon and even sharper all around the edges of the frame! Great value proposition.

I've had this lens for a few weeks. I upgraded from the Canon 1.8 to this so it is a huge change in build quality as well as size and weight!! I have taken some indoor shots but nothing yet in low light so I can't give a assessment of that situation....the photos I have taken are sharp.

Sharp, sleek, ... a little heavy. Feels almost as heavy as my 70-200mm, but it's worth the weight.
