So has Sigma been over-ambitious? Yes, a little. This would be a much better performer if it were a 50-400mm zoom, especially given that it is compatible with Sigma's 1.4x and 2.0x tele-converters for when extra reach is needed.

A very versatile lens

Poor performance at 500mm
Overall this lens performs extremely well and produces some excellent shots. In the specialist areas where it would be used, such as Wildlife and sports, it proves easy to handle and, just as importantly, carry.

Good build and finish, Fast quiet autofocus, Very usable wide open, Manageable for its type, Close focus distance is good.

Lacks a little contrast, Hood a little short for the focal length.
On sony, Super lens, sharp and fast focus, image stabilization doesnt do much at this point IF you have time wait for a optical stabilized version

Sharp as tack

Heavy, HSM would be good OS would be great
I am surprised at the performance. I also own the Sigma 300mm f2.8. It is pretty good also. The 500 is excellent in a light weight 500 super telephoto. And not to cheap anymore. Kinda pricy. If i had it to do over again i would buy the canon or nikon version. They have many features that are better.
Changed from my previous trusty Sigma 50-500, to the slightly heftier 500 EX DG IF APO. Even at these weights, there is a strengthening curve, where you can shoot with it for up to 15 seconds before starting to shake, to extending it to a minute.
I am an amateur photographer owning this lens for last 3 months, spending every weekend for bird and wild life photography. This is a very good, solid lens. It produces good image in f4.5, and step down to f5.6 very good, f.6 -f8 tack sharp image. I got some excellent shots.
This is a superb lens. I took it to the Galapagos islands, and the pictures are stunning. And I am not a good photographer. Highly recommended. A monopod or tripod should be bought with it, though.
I am using this lens with a Sony a7rii + Metabones T Smart Adapter Mark IV. I chose the Canon version of the lens with the Metabones because I wanted to use the camera's auto-focus. With the Sony version of the lens, you have to use the Sony LAEA4 adapter which overrides the camera's auto-focus.
Good product, good price.
Bought for my wife to use on my spare 6D body as a point and shoot camera for wildlife, and she is getting some amazing results! I’ll teach her all about ISO and F. stops and all that goguldigoop later! but in full auto, hand held its unreal!
I have owned the sony version of this lens for about 9 months its fantastic. I use it with the sony a99 and produce wonderful detailed photos of wildlife. I have frirends who own the canon 500 f4 s and to be fair my Photos are every bit as good...
Excellent lens delivered well wrapped on on time. Couldn't be happier
