From a focal length range perspective, the Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens is without comparison. Featuring a 10x focal length range (500mm/50mm = 10x) that starts with 50mm, this lens can cover a huge range of needs.
The first version of this lens earned the nickname Bigma for its 4.25-pound heft and huge size. Now comes Son of Bigma ($1,600, street), lighter at a little less than 4.2 pounds, yet with a number of optical improvements including image stabilization.Like the original, this 50–500mm boasts the...
The Sigma 50-500mm APO DG OS HSM F4.5-6.3 is Sigma's latest version of their 50-500mm superzoom lens, commonly known as the "Bigma". Introduced in February, 2010, it replaces the old 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX DG HSM and features a slightly modified optical formula, losing half a stop at the wide end in...
The Sigma 50–500 mm f/4.5–6.3 APO DG OS HSM model supplemented the offer of that Japanese producer very nicely. Firstly, it substitutes for its predecessor, which didn’t boast any stabilization system, so useful in this range.

solid and robust workmanship,, good or very good image quality in the frame centre practically at all focal lengths,, good image quality at the frame edge for the 50-300 mm range,, chromatic aberration not very burdensome,, slight distortion,, negligible astigmatism,, low coma,, slight vignetting on...

f/6.3 fastness already near 220 mm focal length,, image quality at the maximum aperture for 400-500 mm focal lengths range could have been better,, weak image quality at the frame edge in the range of 400-500 mm focal lengths,, work against bright light leaves something to be desired.
I have had the Sigma 50-500mm for a few years now and I am well pleased with the lens and the quality. The only thing that needs work is that the AF searches a good bit at times, it is worse in low light or really "cluttered" capture areas such as a bird in a thicket, etc.
I'm currently in my second two week rental of this lens. Note that is second rental, not second week of the first rental. I think from the fact that I opted to rent it again, you may be able to guess that I rather like it.

Only f/6.3 at the longest focal length, Still somewhat heavy when compared to say, the 300mm f/4. That said, you get a lot more reach with the Bigma OS., Some minor chromatic aberration, especially in high contrast situations, AF has trouble with cluttered shots (brush in front of the subject).
I have only had this lens for a couple of weeks. I have been using a 150 - 600 which worked fine for most shots except when I need to to get close shots and the 150 wasn't low enough. The 50 - 500 Sigma works great for that. The pictures are sharp .
Extremely satisfied with the purchase of this lens. The vocal range it has allows you to use it at on the field. The only downside is the wait. It's taken some time to get used to it but it's well worth the shots you capture.
