The Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC HSM is a solid option for APS-C photographers who want a standard-angle prime with an f/1.4 aperture, but it's a little pricey compared with f/1.8 lenses.

  • +

Compact. Opens to f/1.4. Very sharp when stopped down. 0.3-meter close focus. Sturdy build.

  • -

Some edge softness at wide apertures. Modest barrel distortion. Lacks optical stabilization. Pricey.

Over the course of the past several pages, we've taken an in-depth look at the optical and mechanical performance of this compelling fast normal prime lens from Sigma.

  • +

Fast F1.4 maximum aperture, Convenient focal length on APS-C, Beautiful bokeh, Excellent center sharpness, Compact and easy to hold, Minimal vignetting at F2 and above, Resistant to flare and ghosting, 4-year warranty (USA), Very affordable

  • -

More distortion that we'd like to see in a premium prime, Purple fringing near edges/corners, Low contrast wide-open, Somewhat heavy given its size, Average corner sharpness, Not weather-sealed, Sluggish autofocus

I may complete a full Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM Art Lens review in the future, but please use the standardized test results currently available for this lens.

A current member of Sigma's Art line of lenses, the 30mm f/1.4 DC HSM lens updates a popular model from 2005 with a new optical configuration, a new hypersonic motor (HSM) autofocusing drive and rear focusing system. Full-time manual focus override is supported.

During this test, we did have issues with inaccurate focusing, which may be down to a flaw with the samples provided for review, and were able to resolve using the Sigma USB Dock .

  • +

Very good sharpness in the centre, Very well built, f/1.4 aperture, Low falloff and distortion

  • -

Sharpness towards edges of the frame could be better, CA at maximum aperture, Focusing issues with review samples

It would be difficult to complain about a lens which is better than its predecessor practically in every category and only slightly more expensive. What’s more, taking into account the fact that we deal here with a novelty, you can expect that its price will drop further, drawing level with the...

  • +

solid-looking, high quality casing,, excellent image quality in the frame centre,, well-corrected lateral chromatic aberration,, not very bothersome distortion,, good correction of astigmatism,, noticeably lower vignetting level than that of its direct competitors,, noiseless autofocus,, good...

  • -

too weak image quality on the edge of the frame near the maximum relative aperture,, distinct longitudinal chromatic aberration,, noticeable coma.

Forget for a moment that this lens has all but been ignored by reviewers. Ignore the ridiculous reviews that have been posted at DXO Mark and DPReview if you can. This lens is spectacular.

Only had this lens a couple days now, but I can already say it out performs my other apsc lenses. It's not as quick as my sony 20mm 2.8 at focusing, but its right up there with it, and f1.4 is awesome to have.It has a bit of barrel distortion, and the focus by wire in this isn't the greatest.
