No promises, but I would like to complete a full Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens review in the future. For now, please review the standard test results available for this lens and view the eye candy below.

Handling and features This telephoto macro lens from Sigma is the first 180mm macro lens capable of life size magnification with a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture. This lens also sports optical image stabilisation and silent HSM focusing, with full time manual override.

Absolutely excellent, the Sigma 180mm f/2.8 macro delivers equally brilliant image quality for extreme close-ups and general telephoto shooting.

22 December 2012

Longer focal lengths are desirable in macro lenses when you want to photograph moving subjects like insects and small animals. But you need a good working distance to avoid spooking such subjects – and also to allow enough light to reach the subject to illuminate it evenly.

Although the price may seem on the high side for a lens from a third party manufacturer when compared to the prices of lenses from Canon and Nikon. If the excellent optical quality and features such as the fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, optical stabilisation and fast, silent autofocus are taken into...

  • +

Superb sharpness, even at maximum aperture, Effective optical stabilisation, Good build quality, Fast focusing, especially for a macro lens, Hood extender supplied for use on APS-C cameras

  • -

CA towards the edges of the frame may become an issue for some applications, Price may be a little higher than many might expect for a lens from a third party manufacturer

Sigma Corporation has been emphasizing for some time now that they are bored with being perceived as a producer of cheaper and worse equivalents of brand name lenses. Currently they strive to be treated as a serious manufacturer of high quality optics which products can compete easily with the best...

very good build quality,, excellent resolution in the frame centre,, sensational resolution on the edge of the frame, also on full frame,, very well corrected chromatic aberration,, slight spherical aberration,, negligible distortion,, unnoticeable comma,, low astigmatism,, not very bothering...

Sneaking up on insects isn’t easy, as anyone who has attempted a macro shot of one will attest. With reactions many times faster than humans, trying to get close to a fly, wasp, bee or even a butterfly is often an exercise in frustration.

I gathered from critical independent reviews that Canon's 180mm maco is not as sharp as similarly priced Canon lenses. For this reason I finally chose Sigma's 180mm f2.8 macro. After a few months of use, no regrets! PROS: Good materials and workmanship.

Amazing lens. Sharp & fast. Also heavy, so be ready.

I've had both of the lesser focal length versions of this lens. The 105 and the 150. Both were optically really good, sometimes unbeatable in IQ however they were both let down by their AF performance.

Wonderful lens! Beautifully sharp, I bought it to photograph insects in the field and it's excellent for that as it reaches them from a good distance and the "anti-shake" means that it works well for handheld shots. Beautiful bokeh isolates the subjects from the background.

Super sharp. Heavy but hand-holdable with the excellent image stabilization. Excellent lens for macro shots and versatile enough for moderate telephoto shots of birds when you can get close enough. I get a lot of butterfly and dragonfly shots with it.

Great lens for macro! Tack sharp and works great on my Nikon D810.

26 December 2015

This is my FAVORITE lens. Ever. I tried the (name brand) 70-200 and it just wasn't for me- I'm a prime girl. I sold it and bought this and I have never regretted it. This is sharp, fast, and the OS is spectacular. I love it... and any time that space allows, this is the lens on my camera.

24 September 2015

Really sharp lens but focusing, manual and Auto, stopped after 50 pictures and about 30 min of shooting. Returned it. What I did get out of using it: Need a tripod for macro/close up work; Stabilization has to be off with a tripod,so that is an expense that is probably not needed; It is a bit heavy...

Stunning results all the time.

Astonishing sharpness, effective stabilization. Sigma has stated that this lens is prepared for 50+ megapixel sensors. Beautiful, neutral colours. Beautiful bokeh. Very versatile as a close focusing 180mm prime or serious macro.

I would recomend this lens to anyone wanting perfecton in a long macro lens.

  • +

It is by far the sharpest lens I have ever used. It is great for insect and flowers because it is long enough you don't have to get to close to your sbject.

  • -

It is real heavy. I don't think it is mechanicaly as good as a canon L but canon did not have a macro this long with an imag stabilizer when I purchased it.
