The Sigma 18-250mm F3.6-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM is one of the best of the current bunch of SLR superzooms, with decent optics, fast autofocus and effective image stabilization. It's a reliable performer, and its close-up capability is handy too.

  • +

13.9x focal length range with impressive closeup capability, ideal general purpose / travel lens, Fast, quiet autofocus, Effective image stabilization (about 3 stops benefit at all focal lengths), Good build quality, smooth zoom ring action and limited zoom creep

  • -

Somewhat soft wide open in the middle of the zoom range, Very strong pincushion distortion across much of the zoom range

Although it is by no means perfect, the built-in optical stabilisation technology and superior image sharpness of the Sigma 18-250mm makie it a strong contender for anyone considering an all-in-one superzoom lens.

  • +

    Effective optical stabilisation

  • -

    Focusing ring rotates in AF

There is an underlying desire in every travel or street photographer to be able to carry one lens to cover all contingencies.

By Jo Plumridge Sigma introduced this lens in 2009, as an upgrade to its 18-200mm lens. The lens comes in Sigma, Canon, Nikon, and Pentax mounts, and it includes optical stabilization (as denoted by the "OS" in the lens' title).

At 13.8X, this digital-only 29-400mm equivalent (on DSLRs with 1.6X lens factors) offers the broadest zoom range of any Sigma lens. Joining Sigma's first digital-only superzoom of 2004, the 18-200mm, this $530 (street) lens adds optical stabilization (OS), four elements of super-low-dispersion glass...

This lens was purchased to replace the two kit lenses on my Nikon D5300. I was ready to accept some compromises for convenience, but I am very satisfied with the lens. The lightweight composite body looks and feels high tech, and the lens system seems a perfect match for my camera in most...

I purchased the lens for my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary cruise, and only wanted to carry one lens, that would cover all of my needs. I wanted to spend my time taking pictures of the family, and not changing lenses.

  • +

Build and Image quality are great. Price is very reasonable.

  • -

Lens creep can be an issue. Focus can be a little soft at the extreme edge of the picture.

Image quality is overall very good, as good as the best lenses just a generation ago, and, as I recall, some excellent photos were taken in the 20th Century. Inexpensive, rugged, lightweight. Works only on crop sensor cameras (such as APS-C sensors).

  • +

Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Lightweight, Rugged

I bought this lens for an all in one carry around lens. I recently took it on a cruise and the images were excellent...better than I expected for such a wide range lens. Images came out clear and with excellent color. I post process with Adobe PS and this is where I definitly noticed the difference.

I wanted a solid walkabout lens for my D5100 without breaking the bank. I had the option of buying the Nikon 18-300 for about $1000 or a 3rd party lens. I really did't want to invest too much in glass for a D series mount as I can see myself moving up to an F series in a couple of years.
