Sigma continues to innovate with their 150–500mm f/5–6.3 APO DG OS HSM ultra-telephoto lens. While designed for full-frame sensors, it’s equally at home when used with smaller APS-C sensors. That’s a lot of flexibility for one lens.

I'd like to do a full review of the Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens lens at some point. No promises.

The focal range of this optic will generally appeal to budding wildlife photographers after that extra bit of reach, without the expense of manufacturers own offerings, or the inconvenience of prime lenses.

Sigmaniacs and assorted bloggers have, over the years, dubbed Sigma's longer tele zooms with nicknames that seem to have stuck. The 50-500mm f/4-6.3, for example, is known as "the Bigma." The 300-800mm f/5.6 is the Sigmazilla.

A super-telephoto zoom lens with optical stabilisation ideally suited to wildlife photography. This super-telephoto zoom lens costs around £695 and sports a silent Hyper Sonic focusing motor and optical stabilisation.

The Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM is the company's latest offering in the extreme telephoto zoom budget marketplace and it kicks in with a few eyebrow raising surprises! Replacing the 170-500mm model that is now quite long in the tooth the new lens has a good specification for its price.

  • +

Fast focusing, Good stabilisation system, Excellent value for money, Relatively compact

  • -

OS system slightly noisy, Tripod foot could be half inch longer to make more comfortable handle.

It is really difficult to sum up this lens’s performance in a objective way as there is practically nothing you can compare it to. The only rival in its class is the Tamron 200-500 mm and we haven’t had the opportunity to test it so far.

  • +

good or very good picture quality in the range of 150-370 mm,, solid barrel and good workmanship quality,, good control over chromatic aberration,, low vignetting,, low distortion,, quite well-controlled astigmatism,, low coma,, autofocus silent and quite quick,, generous selection of accessories,,...

  • -

weak frame edge picture quality at wide aperture,, too low picture quality at 500 mm focal length,, f/6.3 already from 290 mm,, average work against the bright light,, huge filters diameter.

Sigma's APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens is a telephoto zoom with a 3.3x magnification ratio that will suit photographers who enjoy taking close-ups of sports or wildlife. Although not particularly fast, it is reasonably portable and has an affordable price tag for its build quality and optical...

Awesome Lens! Love it! Getting clear images at max distance. Love how you can override the auto focus to hit your target manually without switching it on the camera! Very happy! Sigma makes a great lens..I have 3 amazing Nikkor Lenses, a Sigma 70-300mm that is awesome for macro..

If you need a zoom that goes to 500 mm, this lens is a real bargin. It is better and cost less than the Tamron 200-500. The new Tamron 150-600 will give this lens a good run for the money, but it is still cost about $200 more. The AF is fast enough for birds in flight, at least most of the time.

    Awesome reach!

For this price those lens fits the bill. I have not tried them out in multiple conditions yet, but for the price they cannot be beaten.

Since my move from Canon to Nikon, I've been lacking a long lens. I do have the 70-300VR, but 300 is not long enough for birds. The Canon 100-400 has no equal on the Dark Side and so I've waited for this lens.

  • +

BUILD, tripod mount, range, IQ - and definitely the OS

Weight, but what's to be expected of a 500mm?

The 150-500 mm is Sigma ’s very popular long telezoom lens with optical image stabilisation. It comes with fittings both for Canon AF and Nikon AF. Its minimum focusing distance is 220 cm so it is not a lens for enclosed spaces, but more for the grand outdoors.

Really gets out there, but is hard to keep steady enough to get a clear image. We'll see how it does with video or macro work.
